Job Description
As part of our Web Services team, you will look after an enterprise Content Management System (CMS) and the Linux environment that supports it. You will keep the CMS running reliably, investigate problems and support changes and releases from preparation to final checks.
You will handle day-to-day work independently and work with application, infrastructure and security colleagues when an issue involves other systems. You will also help improve how the CMS is run and documented.
Responsibilities
- Administer the CMS: Maintain its configuration, access and integrations with other systems. Help CMS users and application teams with technical issues.
- Monitor and troubleshoot: Monitor availability, performance and capacity. Investigate incidents, identify the root cause where possible and follow problems through to resolution.
- Manage changes and releases: Prepare and carry out CMS maintenance and agreed changes, including planned maintenance windows, which may occasionally fall outside normal office hours. Coordinate releases and upgrades with the teams involved, check the results and document what changed.
- Maintain the supporting Linux systems: Administer the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (8 and 9) servers used by the CMS, including monitoring, hardening, patching and routine maintenance. Support operating system upgrades when needed.
- Support web services and integrations: Administer web server software, such as Apache HTTP Server or NGINX, including its configuration, updates and troubleshooting. With the relevant specialist teams, troubleshoot connections to media and download services, DNS, certificates and the content delivery network (CDN).
- Keep services secure and recoverable: Apply the agreed security baseline, fix vulnerabilities within agreed deadlines and support audits. Take part in documented backup and restore tests.
- Work with stakeholders: Gather technical requirements and advise stakeholders on possible solutions. Prepare simple solution proposals, join service reviews and provide regular reports on how the platform is performing. Handle escalations in your area, and coordinate the technical steps when an issue involves several teams.
- Improve and document how we work: Keep configuration records, runbooks and handovers up to date. Share knowledge with the team and cover for colleagues when needed. Suggest improvements to CMS operations and put agreed changes into practice, using scripting or automation where it helps.
Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or a related technical field.
- More than 2 years of relevant experience, including hands-on administration of a CMS in production, covering configuration, troubleshooting, monitoring and release support.
- Hands-on Linux administration experience, ideally with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Working knowledge of web server software such as Apache HTTP Server or NGINX, and of how a CMS connects to other systems, for example through DNS, certificates and a CDN.
- Experience with incident handling, planned changes, backups and technical documentation.
- An understanding of web security basics, including access controls, certificates, logging and vulnerability management.
- Useful additional experience: an enterprise content management or newsroom system; Ansible, Bash or Python; Tomcat/Java, PHP or Node.js; load balancing or CDN services such as Akamai.
- The ability to analyze difficult technical problems and make sound decisions within your area of responsibility.
- Good teamwork and communication skills, and fluent written and spoken English for working with colleagues in other locations.
