Ætomic builds AI systems for real-world operations, transforming operational data into awareness, judgment, and action. The company helps organizations understand what is happening in their environment, determine what should happen next, and respond effectively. Ætomic’s mission is to become the intelligence layer powering some of the world’s most complex operations. This vision, which the company calls Operational Intelligence, drives its focus on robust, scalable AI solutions that deliver practical impact.

Ætomic is seeking a senior technical leader to help develop and scale the intelligence and command technologies supporting increasingly autonomous real-world operations.

Our AEGIS platform is undergoing operational piloting, while Lightbringer, our AI intelligence and governance architecture, is under active development.

This is an opportunity to shape the technical foundations of an early-stage company with working software, an ambitious technology roadmap and significant engineering challenges ahead.

Engagement structure: Initially fractional and equity-based, with no guaranteed salary at this stage. This opportunity is intended for an experienced technical leader who can commit meaningful time alongside existing professional commitments and is interested in building long-term value.

A transition to a full-time CTO position may be considered as the company grows, subject to mutual agreement and financing.

• Establish and challenge system architecture, engineering standards, security and technical direction.
• Review and govern software development, including code quality, reliability, testing and deployment.
• Guide integration across AI systems, cloud infrastructure, operational data, edge devices and autonomous platforms.
• Identify technical risks, failure modes, architectural weaknesses and scaling constraints.
• Help move working prototypes and early deployments towards production-grade, commercially scalable systems.
• Contribute to technical due diligence, future engineering recruitment and technology partnerships.
  

An experienced CTO, VP Engineering, Principal Architect or technical founder with a demonstrated record of building and deploying complex systems.

You should understand several of the following:

• AI/ML systems and agent orchestration
• Distributed systems and cloud architecture
• Edge computing, IoT and real-time systems
• Computer vision, robotics or autonomous systems
• Security architecture, observability and operational reliability
• AI-assisted software engineering and its limitations

You do not need expertise in every discipline. You must understand how different technologies interact, where they fail and how to engineer systems that can be trusted in real-world operations.

We value technical judgment and demonstrated delivery over academic credentials or impressive job titles.

This is not an outsourcing, agency or conventional project-management engagement.

Rather than submitting a generic CV or cover letter, please provide concise, substantive answers to these four questions:

1. What is the most technically complex system you have personally helped architect or deploy? What was your actual contribution?

2. You inherit an engineering codebase supporting live operational workflows. What are the first three things you inspect, and why?

3. What do you consider the greatest technical challenge in coordinating AI, human operators and autonomous machines in real-world environments?

4. Why does an initially fractional, equity-based technical leadership opportunity interest you?
