Head of Data Science – Cartography

Role Overview

Are you a visionary leader passionate about shaping the future of location intelligence and spatial AI? We are seeking a Head of Data Science – Cartography to direct our Data Science function and transform mapping technologies at scale. In this strategic role, you will define the overarching Data Science strategy, lead a team of high-caliber Data Scientists, and drive AI/ML innovations that directly enhance map accuracy, freshness, coverage, and quality. Working with dynamic, large-scale datasets, you will bridge technical execution, product strategy, and people leadership alongside cross-functional partners in Product, Engineering, and Data Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Data Science Strategy & Roadmap: Define, execute, and scale a state-of-the-art Data Science roadmap closely aligned with core business priorities and product vision.
• AI & Machine Learning Innovation: Drive end-to-end AI/ML solutions across the full ML lifecycle—from problem definition and experimentation through to production deployment, monitoring, and continuous optimization.
• Geospatial Problem Solving: Tackle complex spatial challenges, including map matching, geocoding, POI intelligence, road networks, routing, and overall map quality.
• Technical Leadership: Guide architectural and algorithmic choices across Machine Learning, statistical modeling, optimization, deep learning, and Explainable AI (XAI).
• Team Building & Culture: Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing Data Science team through career growth, capability development, and succession planning while cultivating a culture of technical excellence and experimentation.
• Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate seamlessly with Product, Engineering, and Data Engineering to turn ambiguous business challenges into scalable data products.
• Domain Advancement: Stay at the forefront of emerging AI, ML, and geospatial technologies, introducing modern capabilities into the Cartography organization.

Qualifications & Core Competencies

Leadership & Domain Expertise

• Experience: 10+ years of experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, or AI, with a proven track record of managing and developing Data Science teams.
• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Econometrics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or related field).
• Domain Application: Demonstrated background applying Data Science and ML to geospatial, mapping, navigation, mobility, or location intelligence problems.
• Scale & Complexity: Proven ability to work with large-scale, complex datasets (spatial, mobility, behavioral, GPS, POI, and road network data) and build production ML systems.

Technical & Engineering Skills

• Programming & Libraries: Expert Python skills (including classical ML libraries) and proficiency with SQL.
• Advanced ML Architectures: Experience with Computer Vision (image/video analysis) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) or graph-based ML techniques.
• Algorithms & Data Structures: Deep understanding of graph data structures, graph algorithms, and core Machine Learning principles.
• Explainable AI: Ability to leverage Explainable AI (XAI) to communicate complex model outputs and recommendations effectively to stakeholders.
• Cloud & Orchestration: Experience with cloud platforms (GCP / GCS, AWS, Azure) and data pipeline/orchestration tools (Flink, Airflow).
• Software Engineering Standards: Solid grounding in modern engineering practices, including Git, CI/CD, testing, and production ML workflows.
