Job Opportunity:

BHSI has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Construction Underwriter to join our Kuala Lumpur Branch. This is an opportunity to help shape and grow our Facultative construction business, build meaningful market relationships and make a visible contribution to BHSI’s continued growth in the region. The successful candidate will bring together their technical underwriting expertise, commercial judgment and strong market relationships to build a profitable, resilient and sustainable portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain a profitable and sustainable Facultative construction portfolio, with appropriate risk selection, pricing and capacity deployment.
• Deliver profitable growth in CAR/EAR business while maintaining underwriting discipline and alignment with Group guidelines.
• Expand BHSI’s business opportunities and market relationships with brokers, intermediaries, cedants and customers.
• Help shape portfolio direction and priorities through market insight, planning and forecasting.
• Strengthen underwriting outcomes through effective collaboration with Claims, Compliance and other functions.
• Enhance the team’s understanding and response to market developments and emerging construction risks.

Key Skills and Experience:

• Typically 8–15 years of progressive underwriting experience, preferably in construction underwriting, with demonstrated capability in handling increasingly complex risks, and making sound commercial decisions.
• Construction underwriting expertise, with strong knowledge of construction insurance products, underwriting practices and market dynamics.
• Commercial and portfolio management capability, balancing growth opportunities with profitability, risk appetite and long-term portfolio quality.
• Relationship-building and business development skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships with brokers, intermediaries, cedants and customers and develop sustainable business opportunities.
• Strategic and analytical thinking, using portfolio performance, market developments and emerging risks to inform underwriting decisions and priorities.
• Stakeholder collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to work effectively across functions and bring different perspectives together to achieve strong business outcomes.
• Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the confidence to articulate underwriting positions and communicate complex matters clearly.
• Regional market capability and versatility, with the ability and willingness to travel and develop business across Asia, particularly Vietnam, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
• An Engineering qualification is desirable, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
