Research Scientist
Research | Testing | Scientific Problem-Solving
Research work at CET Scientific Services spans laboratory testing, material characterisation, product development, failure analysis and technical investigations across a wide range of samples. The Research Scientist will support projects by designing experiments, interpreting analytical results and helping clients and project teams understand the scientific findings.
Your Research Work
- Develop experimental approaches based on the scientific question, sample type and project objectives.
- Conduct laboratory experiments and analytical investigations using appropriate methods.
- Prepare, handle and document samples in accordance with established procedures.
- Review test results and determine whether additional analysis or follow-up experiments are required.
- Support investigations involving materials, chemicals, polymers, composites, products and other technical samples.
- Use suitable analytical techniques to characterise samples and investigate composition, properties or performance.
- Examine unexpected results, contamination, defects or product failures and help determine possible causes.
- Carry out literature searches and technical research to support ongoing assignments.
- Compare experimental findings with specifications, standards or previous test results where applicable.
- Maintain complete laboratory records, experimental notes, raw data and sample information.
- Prepare research reports, technical summaries and presentations for internal review or client projects.
- Work with other scientists and laboratory personnel to coordinate testing schedules and project requirements.
- Contribute ideas for improving experimental methods, testing procedures and technical workflows.
Technical Strengths
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Physics, Environmental Science, or a related scientific field.
- Previous experience in laboratory research, analytical testing, R&D or scientific consultancy is preferred.
- Sound understanding of experimental design and scientific data interpretation.
- Comfortable working with laboratory instruments and analytical procedures.
- Experience with techniques such as FTIR, HPLC, GC-MS, ICP, XRD, SEM, DSC, TGA or related analytical methods would be useful.
- Able to approach unfamiliar technical problems logically and determine what information is needed for further investigation.
- Strong scientific writing and documentation skills.
- Careful with sample handling, measurements and research records.
- Able to work independently while contributing effectively within a technical team.
Projects & Collaboration
The work is varied rather than limited to one type of experiment. Depending on the assignment, the scientist may be involved in product testing, material characterisation, failure investigation, environmental analysis or research and development. CET's published R&D services cover samples including inorganic powders, nanomaterials, concrete, metals, polymers and composites, supported by a broad range of analytical techniques.
Clear communication is important because research findings need to be converted into useful technical information for project teams and clients. The role therefore combines laboratory work, data analysis, scientific investigation and technical reporting.
