We are looking for a freelance Aerospace / Robotics Engineer with demonstrated aerospace experience to develop a turbojet aircraft concept and demonstrate a simulated, non-contact interception of a flying drone in Gazebo.
Gazebo simulation is the primary deliverable. Applicants must have practical experience building working aircraft or UAV simulations, alongside relevant aerospace engineering, CAD and aerodynamic CFD experience.
The project must be completed by Friday, 18 September 2026. Please confirm your availability and provide a quotation with a realistic breakdown of what you can deliver within this deadline. An immediate start is preferred.
SCOPE OF WORK
1. Gazebo simulation — highest priority
- Create a working simulation featuring the aircraft and a moving target drone.
- Demonstrate a repeatable, non-contact interception scenario.
- Use aircraft motion and flight dynamics appropriate to the concept.
- Deliver the complete Gazebo project, required models and dependencies, configuration files, and clear setup/run instructions.
- Clearly document assumptions, simplifications, and simulation limitations.
2. Brief aerodynamic CAD concept
- Produce a preliminary 3D aircraft model suitable for presentation and simulation.
- Provide editable source files and common exchange formats.
- Recommend a turbine from KingTech Turbines as a reference for the concept, with a brief justification.
3. Aerodynamic CFD analysis
- Conduct external airflow analysis of the proposed aircraft.
- Provide airflow visualisations and relevant aerodynamic results.
- Document the simulation conditions, modelling assumptions, and key findings.
4. Demonstration video
- Produce a clear video showing the aircraft concept, CFD results, and Gazebo interception sequence.
- Use the Instagram reel supplied by us as the intended visual reference.
- Include useful camera views and annotations so the scenario is easy to understand.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated aerospace engineering experience is essential, including relevant aircraft or UAV projects involving aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aircraft design or simulation. Please describe your role and provide supporting project examples.
- Demonstrated hands-on Gazebo experience building working aircraft or UAV simulations; fixed-wing experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience with ROS / ROS 2 and integrating aircraft models into simulation environments.
- CAD and aerodynamic CFD capability relevant to aircraft concepts.
- Ability to deliver a reproducible simulation and clearly explain its assumptions and limitations.
- Availability to begin promptly and deliver the agreed scope by Friday, 18 September 2026.
PLEASE INCLUDE IN YOUR PROPOSAL
- Examples or videos of previous Gazebo aircraft/UAV simulations, with a brief explanation of your contribution.
- A summary of your aerospace engineering experience and relevant aircraft/UAV projects.
- Your proposed approach and software versions.
- A quotation broken down into Gazebo, CAD, CFD, and video work.
- Confirmation of delivery by Friday, 18 September 2026, including realistic deliverables and any scope limitations.
- Any information you need from us to begin immediately.
This is a freelance, project-based engagement. Gazebo is the highest priority; please state clearly what can realistically be completed across all four workstreams within the deadline.
Pay: $10.00 - $50.00 per hour
Experience:
- aerospace engineering / aircraft or UAV projects: 1 year (Preferred)
- Gazebo aircraft or UAV simulation: 1 year (Preferred)
Work Location: In person
