Quantum sensors take more than quantum physics to build. They take people who know their way around hardware.

The Company
The world is blind underground and underwater. Atomionics is giving it sight. We’re building a 3D map of the Earth’s subsurface to pinpoint critical minerals and other resources. Quantum sensors collect data no one else can. AI makes sense of it. Together, they are building towards our Large Planet Model: a clearer way to understand what lies beneath. The same sensors enable navigation where GPS can’t reach.

Our interdisciplinary team works from lab to field to market, turning frontier technology into something that can be trusted, used and scaled in the real world.

The Role

Before a quantum sensor reaches the field, somebody has to machine the parts, build the electronics, test the hardware and keep the lab ready for the next build. That is where you come in.

You will work alongside engineers and physicists as designs become deployable systems. Prior physics or quantum-technology experience is not required.

We're particularly interested in someone who is comfortable working across both mechanical and electronics systems. If your experience is stronger in one area, we'd still like to hear from you if you're keen to develop your skills in the other.

Technical Context

We cool atoms with lasers to near absolute zero to measure tiny changes in gravity. Yes, really. Those measurements let us map what lies beneath the surface. The challenge is taking that level of precision beyond the lab and making it work reliably in real-world conditions.

What You Will Do

• Machine, 3D print, assemble, rework and prototype mechanical parts, assemble PCBs, electronics subsystems and cable harnesses for sensing hardware.
• Carry out inspection, measurement and testing of parts and assemblies, from dimensional checks to continuity, power-up and functional tests.
• Troubleshoot hardware issues, find the root cause and carry out repairs or rework.
• Support integration, testing and troubleshooting alongside engineers and physicists.
• Maintain tools, lab spaces, inventory and workshop readiness so builds move without delay.
• Prepare sensors and equipment for installation, packing and field surveys, with occasional travel for field trials.

What We Are Looking For

• ITE Nitec / Higher Nitec, Diploma, or equivalent qualification in mechanical, electrical or electronics engineering, or a related field.
• Hands-on experience in mechanical and/or electronics work, such as CNC machining (milling and lathe), soldering and rework, assembly or 3D printing.
• Ability to read technical drawings, schematics or BOMs and work to written procedures.
• Practical fault-finding with workshop tools, precision measuring tools or bench instruments.
• Careful documentation habits and comfort with methodical, precise work.
• Care for safety, cleanliness and the quality of what you produce.
• Willingness to learn and work across both mechanical and electronics systems.

Even Better If

• Experience across both mechanical and electronics work.
• Exposure to lasers and/or vacuum systems and the associated safety practice.
• Basic Python scripting for test automation.
• Experience preparing equipment for field or site work.
• Proven hands-on experience across both mechanical fabrication/assembly and electronics assembly/testing.
• Experience integrating mechanical and electronics components into a working system.
