Database Subject Matter Expert (SME) – Microsoft SQL Server

Role Summary

We are seeking an experienced Database Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead the administration, maintenance, optimization, and support of Microsoft SQL Server environments across cloud and on-premises platforms. The successful candidate will serve as the technical authority for database services, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and resilience for mission-critical systems.

Key Responsibilities
Administer, monitor, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server databases across enterprise environments.
Ensure database availability, performance, capacity, security, and operational stability.
Design, implement, and support High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication, and backup/recovery strategies.
Perform database performance analysis and optimization, including query tuning, indexing strategies, and execution plan reviews.
Lead database upgrades, migrations, patching, and modernization initiatives.
Implement and maintain database security controls, access management, encryption, and compliance requirements.
Develop and maintain automation scripts and operational processes using T-SQL and PowerShell.
Troubleshoot and resolve complex database issues and conduct root cause analysis for recurring incidents.
Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and cloud teams to deliver reliable and scalable database services.
Maintain technical documentation, standards, procedures, and operational runbooks.
Provide Level 3 production support and participate in major incident management activities.

Required Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server Database Administration.
Proven experience supporting enterprise-scale database platforms across cloud and on-premises environments.

Strong expertise in:
Microsoft SQL Server (2016/2019/2022)
Azure SQL Database & Azure SQL Managed Instance
Database Performance Tuning and Optimization
High Availability & Disaster Recovery Solutions
Backup, Recovery, and Data Protection Strategies
T-SQL and PowerShell Scripting
Strong understanding of database security, access controls, encryption, and compliance requirements.
Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and stakeholder management skills.
