Role summary
Own the optical design of alignment and inspection systems for our ultra-precision semiconductor equipment. You will define optical architectures, deliver high-accuracy imaging and inspection solutions, and take designs from concept through prototype, qualification and customer deployment. You will work closely with vision software, motion control, mechanical and process engineers, as well as external optics suppliers.
Key responsibilities
- Define optical architectures for high-precision alignment and inspection systems, including multi-camera and infrared imaging configurations.
- Own the optical contribution to system-level error budgets — repeatability, distortion, focus and thermal drift — and drive designs to meet accuracy targets.
- Specify and design lenses, illumination schemes, cameras and sensors; perform optical modelling and tolerancing, and lead make-vs-buy decisions with suppliers.
- Design inspection optics for defect detection on wafers, dies and other precision components, balancing sensitivity against throughput.
- Develop calibration methods and artefacts, including camera-to-stage mapping, distortion correction and multi-camera cross-calibration.
- Ensure thermal and mechanical stability of optical assemblies; collaborate with mechanical and FEA engineers on mounts, drift and vibration.
- Build optical test rigs, characterise prototype optics and conduct measurement system analysis (gauge R&R).
- Define alignment-mark and fiducial design guidelines with customers and internal process teams.
- Release optical drawings, specifications and BOMs; support supplier qualification, FMEA, product safety compliance and field installation.
- Contribute to the technology roadmap and build intellectual property through patents and publications.
Requirements
- MS or PhD in optical engineering, optics, applied physics or a related discipline.
- 8+ years designing optical systems for semiconductor capital equipment or other high-precision instruments — e.g. alignment, inspection, lithography or metrology tools.
- Hands-on lens and system design with optical design software (e.g. Zemax OpticStudio, Code V), including tolerancing, stray-light and thermal analysis.
- Deep knowledge of magnification, NA, resolution vs depth of focus, telecentricity, distortion and illumination design.
- Experience with high-precision alignment or inspection, including sub-pixel registration, focus control and resolution-vs-repeatability trade-offs.
- Practical lab skills: optical alignment, interferometry, MTF and distortion measurement, building and debugging test benches.
- Able to work across disciplines (vision software, motion, mechanical) and with external optics suppliers.
Preferred
- Experience with semiconductor packaging, wafer-level processing or advanced assembly equipment.
- Infrared and SWIR imaging, including imaging through silicon or other materials.
- Dark-field particle and edge inspection design.
- Familiarity with machine vision tools (Halcon, OpenCV, MIL) and image-based calibration.
- Exposure to complementary inspection techniques (e.g. acoustic or X-ray) and multi-sensor data fusion.
- Patents or publications in alignment optics, inspection or metrology.
