The opportunity

Vertical Institute is seeking a hands-on Remote Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and scale the systems powering our learning platform and internal business operations.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams across admissions, sales, operations, finance, and learning delivery to develop scalable tools, integrations, and AI-driven workflows. Your work will directly impact operational efficiency and learner experience across the organisation.

This role is suited for an engineer who enjoys ownership, thrives in fast-moving environments, and is motivated by solving real business problems through practical, high-impact systems.

What You'll Own
1. Core Systems & Architecture

• Platform Engineering: Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure systems for our learning platform and core operations.
• Integrations: Connect LMS, CRM, payment gateways, and third-party SaaS tools for long-term growth.

2. Automation & Internal Tools

• Operational Efficiency: Build tools and workflows to automate manual processes across Sales, Admissions, Finance, and Student Ops.

3. AI & Workflow Innovation

• Practical AI Features: Build AI agents, workflows, and features that eliminate busywork, boost productivity, and improve business decision-making.

4. End-to-End Ownership & Best Practices

• Full Lifecycle: Take features from design and architecture all the way through deployment and ongoing maintenance.
• Quality Standards: Maintain high standards for documentation, automated testing, and system reliability.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Business Partnering: Work with non-technical teams to turn operational needs into reliable technical solutions.
• Clear Communication: Explain trade-offs and tech decisions clearly to all stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

Requirements

• Hands-on Experience: Strong background in full-stack or backend web development using modern frameworks, APIs, and databases.
• Independent Execution: Proven track record of designing, shipping, and maintaining production systems on your own.
• Solid Architecture Skills: Good grasp of system design, performance tuning, and scalability.
• Pragmatic Mindset: Practical, execution-focused approach to solving problems and delivering results.
• Strong Communication: Ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical teammates.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Background in EdTech or Learning Management Systems (LMS).
• Hands-on experience with AI APIs and automation frameworks.
• Track record of integrating SaaS tools (payments, CRM, analytics).
