About the role

We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Commis Chef / Cook to join the kitchen team at BURGER TUNOK SIMANGGANG in Bintulu, Sarawak. This is a full-time position offering an exciting opportunity to develop your culinary skills in a dynamic hospitality environment. As a Commis Chef / Cook, you will work under the guidance of our senior kitchen staff, contributing to the preparation and presentation of high-quality dishes that delight our customers. This role is essential to maintaining the standards and efficiency of our kitchen operations, and you will play a vital part in delivering an exceptional dining experience.

What you'll be doing

  1. Preparing ingredients for cooking by performing tasks such as washing, peeling, chopping and slicing vegetables, meat and other food items

  2. Assisting in the cooking process under the supervision of senior chefs, including grilling, frying, baking and boiling

  3. Following recipes, portion sizes and presentation standards to ensure consistency and quality of dishes

  4. Maintaining cleanliness and organisation of your assigned work station and cooking equipment

  5. Supporting the kitchen team with food plating and garnishing to meet restaurant standards

  6. Handling and storing food items correctly in accordance with health and safety regulations

  7. Assisting with stock rotation and reporting low stock levels to management

  8. Working efficiently during peak service times whilst maintaining food quality and safety standards

  9. Collaborating with team members to ensure smooth kitchen operations and timely food preparation

  10. Adhering to all health and hygiene protocols, including proper handwashing and food safety procedures

What we're looking for

  1. A recognised qualification or certification in culinary arts or food preparation, or equivalent practical experience in a professional kitchen environment

  2. Proven experience working as a Commis Chef, Cook or in a similar entry to mid-level kitchen position within the hospitality and food service industry

  3. Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene practices and health regulations relevant to food preparation

  4. Ability to follow recipes and cooking instructions accurately whilst working efficiently under pressure during busy service periods

  5. Excellent knife skills and competence in food preparation techniques, including cutting, chopping and basic cooking methods

  6. Good physical stamina and the ability to stand for extended periods in a warm kitchen environment

  7. Strong attention to detail with a commitment to maintaining high standards of food presentation and quality

  8. Effective teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with kitchen staff and management

  9. Reliability and punctuality, with a genuine passion for culinary excellence and the hospitality industry

  10. Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends and public holidays as required by the business
