Company Description Hengyuan Refining Company Berhad (HRC), formerly known as Shell Refining Company (Federation of Malaya) Berhad, is a long-established refining company incorporated in Malaysia in 1960 and listed on the Main Market of Bursa Securities. The company is majority-owned by Malaysia Hengyuan International Limited, part of the Shandong Hengyuan Petrochemical group. HRC manages and operates a refinery in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, with a licensed production capacity of 156,000 barrels per day. The facility focuses on refining and manufacturing petroleum products for diverse markets. HRC employs more than 500 people, including staff and contractors, and offers opportunities to contribute to a critical, safety-focused industrial operation.


Role Description This is a full-time, on-site role based at the refinery in Port Dickson for a Senior Process Engineer / Technologist Distillation. The role is responsible for providing technical leadership and expertise on distillation units, including troubleshooting, performance monitoring, and optimization of unit operations. Day-to-day tasks include analyzing operating data, identifying improvement opportunities, developing and implementing process changes, and supporting safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance. The position collaborates closely with operations, maintenance, inspection, and project teams to resolve process issues, support turnaround and shutdown activities, and implement best practices. The Senior Process Engineer / Technologist also contributes to process safety reviews, risk assessments, technology evaluations, and mentoring of less-experienced engineers.


  1. Provide effective and efficient technical support to the site in troubleshooting, optimization, and ensuring safe plant operation.
  2. Monitor plant performance against approved targets on a day-to-day basis, identify existing or potential technical issues, and respond proactively to risks and threats.
  3. Identify and implement specific projects to improve plant safety, reliability, integrity, efficiency, operability, capacity, and overall margin.
  4. Perform process and energy optimization, as well as process troubleshooting, for the assigned units.
  5. Review engineering deliverables, including Design Basis, FEED documents, PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, heat and material balances (H&MB), utility summaries, and operating manuals.
  6. Provide process and operational input to process safety reviews, commissioning activities, and performance test runs for all plant changes.
  7. Lead or participate in incident investigations and structured problem-solving activities.
  8. Act as a direct interface between HRC PD Technology and Operations/Engineering to facilitate the implementation of plant changes and best practices.
  9. Coach and mentor junior technologists and site personnel to build competencies in distillation and process engineering.
  10. Identify and implement business improvement initiatives within the assigned units.
  11. Perform crude oil evaluations to assess suitability against plant capabilities.


Job Requirements


  1. A Chemical Engineer with strong process engineering capabilities and relevant experience is required.
  2. Minimum 6–10 years of experience in Distillation Technology, including technical services, process design, development, optimization, and troubleshooting in oil and gas refining.
  3. Strong knowledge of refinery configurations, integration, and refinery economics is required.
  4. Proficiency in process simulation using tools such as Petro-SIM, HYSYS, UniSim, or equivalent.
  5. Strong leadership skills with the ability to work effectively as a team player.
  6. Excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills.
