About the Opportunity

On behalf of our customer, who is a growing healthcare technology organization, we are seeking a hands-on Ruby on Rails Development Leader to take ownership of a mission-critical EMR platform.

This is a high-impact role for a technical leader who thrives in both legacy modernization and team leadership. You’ll step into a platform with a strong foundation—but clear opportunity to modernize, scale, and evolve.

What You’ll Do

Platform Ownership & Modernization

• Own and evolve a Ruby on Rails-based EMR platform (primarily a modular monolith)
• Lead modernization efforts across an aging codebase (Rails + jQuery)
• Drive upgrades (e.g., Rails 5 → 6+ and beyond) and improve system maintainability
• Identify and reduce technical debt while balancing feature delivery

Architecture & Technical Leadership

• Guide system design across a monolith with emerging microservices
• Make key decisions around scalability, performance, and platform evolution
• Stay hands-on—contributing to code, debugging, and architecture when needed
• Act as a technical escalation point for complex production issues

Cloud & Infrastructure

• Support and help lead migration to Amazon Web Services (AWS)
• Work within a containerized environment using Docker and Kubernetes
• Drive improvements across CI/CD, deployment processes, and system reliability

AI-Enabled Development

• Leverage tools like GitHub Copilot and similar technologies to accelerate development
• Explore opportunities to integrate AI into both engineering workflows and product capabilities (APIs, prompting, automation)
• Help the team adopt a forward-thinking, AI-enabled engineering mindset

Team Leadership

• Lead and mentor a distributed team of ~5–6 engineers
• Foster collaboration between engineering and product teams
• Support hiring, coaching, and team growth

What We’re Looking For

Technical Expertise

• Strong hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails (architect-level preferred)
• Proven experience working with and modernizing legacy monolithic applications
• Experience with MySQL or relational databases, including debugging data-related issues
• Solid understanding of system design, architecture, and production systems

Cloud & DevOps

• Experience with AWS (migration experience highly preferred)
• Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes in production environments

AI Mindset (Must-Have)

• Active use of AI tools (e.g., Copilot) in development workflows
• Interest in applying AI beyond coding—into product features and automation
• Open, forward-thinking approach to adopting new technologies

Leadership & Collaboration

• Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams (distributed/offshore preferred)
• Strong communicator who partners well with product and business stakeholders
• Team-oriented mindset—able to influence without ego

Nice to Have

• Experience with EMR/EHR or healthcare platforms
• Spanish language skills (to support collaboration with Mexico-based team)

Pay: From $65.00 per hour
