Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Instrument Technician to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant instrumentation and control systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance, inspection, calibration, troubleshooting, testing, repair, commissioning, and functional testing of instrumentation and control equipment.

The role requires practical knowledge of field instruments, control systems, PLC/DCS, calibration activities, loop checking, and maintenance practices. The Instrument Technician will work closely with engineers, planners, operators, contractors, and other maintenance personnel to minimize downtime and maintain plant operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance on instrumentation and control systems.
  • Inspect field instruments and identify abnormal conditions, defects, and potential failures.
  • Carry out calibration, testing, servicing, repair, and replacement of instrumentation equipment.
  • Perform calibration of pressure, temperature, flow, and level instruments.
  • Conduct loop checking, function testing, instrument testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose instrumentation faults and control system problems.
  • Support maintenance and troubleshooting activities involving PLC and DCS systems.
  • Inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot field instruments including:
  • Transmitters
  • Control valves
  • Gas detectors
  • Pressure instruments
  • Temperature instruments
  • Flow instruments
  • Level instruments
  • Execute maintenance work orders and job packages in accordance with approved procedures and schedules.
  • Support plant commissioning, start-up, shutdown, turnaround, and maintenance activities as required.
  • Monitor equipment condition and report defects, abnormalities, and potential reliability issues.
  • Work closely with engineers, planners, operators, contractors, and other technical personnel to ensure effective maintenance execution.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and within the required timeframe.
  • Record and document maintenance activities, inspection findings, calibration results, repairs, and equipment conditions accurately.
  • Update relevant maintenance records and work orders through CMMS / SAP PM.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and reliability initiatives to improve equipment performance and plant availability.

Technical Competencies

Candidates should be conversant in:

  • Instrumentation and control systems fundamentals.
  • Calibration of pressure, temperature, flow, and level instruments.
  • Loop checking and function testing.
  • Instrument commissioning and start-up activities.
  • Troubleshooting of instrumentation faults and control systems.
  • Preventive and corrective maintenance practices.
  • PLC and DCS systems at basic to intermediate level.
  • Field instruments, including transmitters, control valves, and gas detectors.
  • Instrument testing and calibration equipment.
  • Reading and interpreting instrumentation drawings and technical documentation.
  • Maintenance procedures and job packages.

Instrumentation & Control Systems

  • Practical knowledge of PLC / DCS systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic control system issues and instrumentation-related faults.
  • Familiarity with instrument loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, termination drawings, and relevant technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as HART and Fieldbus will be an advantage, particularly for more advanced roles.
  • Experience with control valves, transmitters, gas detection systems, and other process instrumentation.

Troubleshooting & Problem Solving

  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose instrumentation and control system faults effectively.
  • Identify the root cause of equipment or instrument problems and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving and analytical thinking skills.
  • Able to respond effectively to equipment breakdown and emergency maintenance situations.
  • Able to identify potential equipment failures and escalate issues appropriately.

Maintenance & Work Execution

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance according to approved maintenance plans.
  • Execute corrective maintenance and breakdown repairs.
  • Follow approved maintenance procedures, work instructions, and job packages.
  • Ensure tools, test equipment, spare parts, and other required resources are available before work execution.
  • Support turnaround, shutdown, commissioning, and emergency maintenance activities when required.
  • Ensure completed maintenance work is properly recorded and documented.

SAP PM / CMMS

  • Familiar with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Familiar with SAP ECC6 Plant Maintenance (SAP PM) Module.
  • Able to update maintenance work orders, equipment records, and relevant maintenance information.
  • Understanding of maintenance planning, work execution, and equipment history is an advantage.

Communication & Coordination

  • Good communication skills with the ability to work effectively with:
  • Engineers
  • Maintenance Planners
  • Operations / Operators
  • Contractors
  • Vendors
  • Other technical and site personnel
  • Able to coordinate maintenance activities effectively at site.
  • Demonstrates good teamwork and willingness to work in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Able to communicate technical issues and maintenance findings clearly.

Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Safety is a critical requirement for this position, particularly within the Oil & Gas environment.

  • Strictly comply with company HSE / HSSE requirements and safe work practices.
  • Follow applicable work permit, isolation, lockout/tagout, and equipment safety procedures.
  • Ensure all instrumentation maintenance activities are performed safely and in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, hazards, and potential risks.
  • Participate in toolbox meetings, safety briefings, and other relevant site safety activities.
  • Comply with applicable statutory, regulatory, environmental, and company requirements.
  • Maintain proper housekeeping and safety standards at the worksite.
  • Support overall plant asset integrity and reliability requirements.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare accurate maintenance and technical reports.
  • Document calibration, testing, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair activities.
  • Maintain accurate equipment and maintenance records.
  • Record instrument conditions, defects, findings, and corrective actions.
  • Provide timely feedback on maintenance progress, equipment condition, and outstanding issues.
  • Ensure all maintenance documentation is completed in accordance with company procedures.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in the required industry, preferably in Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Refinery, Process Plant, or Plant Maintenance.
  • Possess a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumentation, Electrical & Instrumentation, Control Engineering, or related Engineering field / equivalent qualification.
  • Familiar with SAP ECC6 Plant Maintenance (SAP PM) Module.
  • Familiar with CMMS and computerized maintenance systems.
  • Efficient in report writing and computer applications.
  • Strong practical knowledge of instrumentation maintenance and control systems.
  • Good troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Strong commitment to HSE requirements and safe working practices.
  • Willing to work at site and support planned, shutdown, turnaround, and emergency maintenance activities.
