Our client is a growing financial-services technology company developing a modern investment and brokerage platform.

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, develop and enhance secure, scalable and highly available backend services. The successful candidate will work across customer accounts, investment activity, transaction processing, user access, platform integrations and operational workflows.

This is a hands-on engineering role with genuine ownership of architecture, reliability, performance and technical standards. You will work closely with product, operations, business analysts, QA, DevOps, mobile and frontend teams in a regulated, transaction-intensive environment.

Candidates with fewer than six years of experience may also be considered for a Backend Engineer appointment if they demonstrate strong Java backend development, microservices and API experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and continuously improve Java-based backend services.

• Own the technical design of scalable, maintainable and highly available microservices and distributed applications.

• Build and maintain REST APIs, gRPC interfaces, asynchronous messaging services and platform integrations.

• Develop backend capabilities supporting customer onboarding, account management, user access, entitlements, cash movement, transaction history and investment activity.

• Build services for transaction servicing, operational processing, workflow automation, data controls, exception handling and auditability.

• Work with product, business and operations stakeholders to understand requirements, data flows and technical dependencies.

• Improve software quality through automated testing, peer reviews, CI/CD, monitoring, logging, root-cause analysis and performance tuning.

• Investigate complex production issues and improve system reliability, recovery, scalability, fault tolerance and operational readiness.

• Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews and code reviews.

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers.

• Contribute to engineering standards, technical documentation and continuous improvement of the software-delivery process.

Requirements

• At least six years of hands-on backend software-engineering experience for the Senior Backend Engineer position.

• Strong professional experience in Java.

• Strong experience with the Spring ecosystem, preferably including Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security and Spring Data JPA.

• Experience delivering and operating production systems based on microservices, service-oriented architecture or distributed-system principles.

• Strong experience developing and integrating RESTful APIs.

• Knowledge of gRPC, asynchronous messaging, event-driven architecture or third-party integrations is an advantage.

• Strong relational-database knowledge, including data modelling, SQL, indexing, transactions, query optimisation and performance tuning.

• Experience with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server or a similar relational database.

• Experience with Hibernate, JPA, Spring Data, MyBatis or equivalent data-access technologies.

• Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, automated testing, Git, CI/CD and Agile delivery.

• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot production issues and improve backend performance, stability and scalability.

• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly.
