The Engine Overhaul business has the capability to service all products in the Trent engine family, this includes Trent 500, Trent 700, Trent 800, Trent 900, Trent 1000 and Trent XWB; SAESL is the only Trent engine MRO that can support all product variants. The Engine Overhaul business has the capacity to repair and overhaul over 300 Trent engines per year and it is equipped with a state-of-the-art Engine Test Facility that supports our best-in-class engine turnaround times.

Job Summary

The Manager, Training Academy & Competency Management is responsible for leading and governing the organisation’s Technical Training Academy and competency management framework to ensure a competent, capable, and authorized workforce across all Operational Business Units (OBUs). The role is accountable for developing structured capability pathways, strengthening competency governance, and implementing effective technical training systems that support operational excellence, product and people safety, regulatory compliance, and Zero Defects outcomes. The incumbent will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Airworthiness, Planning, and HSE teams to strengthen workforce capability, support future business growth, and build sustainable learning, competency, and safety culture across the organisation.

Job Responsibilities

Training & Competency System Governance

Lead and govern the organisation’s Training and Competency framework, including competency models, SKE requirements, assessment methodologies, assessor standards, and the Competency & Stamp Management (CSM) system. Ensure robust governance, standardisation, traceability, audit readiness, and alignment with regulatory, operational, product safety, HSE, and organisational requirements.

Training Academy & Capability Development

Establish and lead the Technical Training Academy to build a competent frontline workforce comprising Technicians, Inspectors, and Certifying Staff (CRS). Develop structured capability pathways, including Technician-to-Inspector-to-CRS progression, and oversee technical training covering induction, core skills, task qualification, recurrency, advanced capabilities, new engine types, repair processes, technologies, and operational systems.

Competency Assurance & Product Safety Integration

Ensure competency management directly supports product safety, people safety, quality performance, and Zero Defects outcomes by identifying and addressing capability gaps and competency-related risks. Integrate competency governance with E2E, SAF, Human Performance, HSE, and operational risk management frameworks, while driving targeted training and capability improvement initiatives for critical and safety-sensitive activities.

Operational Integration & Continuous Improvement

Partner with Operations, Quality, Airworthiness, Engineering, Planning, HSE, HR, and other support functions to align training and competency systems with operational requirements, workforce readiness, deployment flexibility, resilience, and future business growth. Drive continuous improvement in training effectiveness, competency processes, digital learning solutions, modern training technologies, and simulator-based learning, while embedding competency governance into operational routines and workforce planning processes.

Qualification / Experience

  • Degree in Engineering, Aerospace, Aviation Management, Technical Education, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 8–10 years of relevant experience in aerospace MRO, aviation, manufacturing, or technical operations, including at least 3 years of experience in training management.
  • Proven experience in training systems, competency management, operational quality, technical capability development, and the design and implementation of effective training programmes.
  • Strong understanding of aerospace maintenance operations, regulatory and airworthiness requirements, technical training governance, and competency and authorisation systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with Microsoft Power Platform tools such as Power BI and Power Automate is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with operational leadership teams and cross-functional stakeholders to drive workforce development, training effectiveness, and organisational capability initiatives.
