JOB SCOPE

Associate Lecturer – Diploma in Maritime Studies & Offshore Engineering

Specialisation: Offshore Safety, OPITO BOSIET & Welding1. Position Overview

The Associate Lecturer will be responsible for the teaching, training, assessment and academic support of students enrolled in the Diploma in Maritime Studies and Offshore Engineering.

The role combines academic teaching with practical, industry-oriented training, with particular expertise in offshore operations, offshore safety, OPITO BOSIET, welding, fabrication and marine/offshore engineering.

The Associate Lecturer is expected to bring relevant industry experience into the classroom and practical training environment, ensuring that students develop both the theoretical knowledge and practical competencies required for careers in the maritime, offshore oil & gas, marine engineering, shipbuilding, fabrication and energy sectors.

2. Teaching Responsibilities – Diploma in Maritime Studies & Offshore Engineering

The Associate Lecturer will teach and facilitate Diploma-level modules, which may include:

Maritime Studies

  • Introduction to Maritime Industry
  • Maritime Operations and Management
  • Shipboard Operations
  • Marine Safety and Emergency Response
  • Maritime Security and Risk Management
  • Port and Terminal Operations
  • Marine Transportation and Logistics
  • Maritime Regulations and Conventions
  • Navigation and Seamanship fundamentals
  • Marine Environmental Management
  • Maritime Occupational Safety and Health

Offshore Engineering

  • Introduction to Offshore Engineering
  • Offshore Oil & Gas Operations
  • Offshore Structures and Facilities

  • Offshore Maintenance

3. Specialist Teaching – Offshore Safety & OPITO

The Associate Lecturer will provide specialist instruction in offshore safety and emergency response, including relevant components of OPITO BOSIET, subject to the lecturer's applicable OPITO certification and trainer/assessor approval.

Areas may include:

  • Offshore safety induction
  • Offshore hazards and risk management
  • Personal safety and survival
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Helicopter safety and emergency procedures
  • Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), where appropriately qualified
  • Sea survival techniques
  • Fire prevention and firefighting
  • Emergency breathing systems, where applicable
  • Emergency equipment and survival equipment
  • Offshore emergency response
  • Offshore safety culture
  • Permit-to-work and safe systems of work

The Associate Lecturer will integrate offshore safety principles into Diploma modules and practical learning activities.

4. Specialist Teaching – Offshore Welding & Fabrication

The Associate Lecturer will teach theoretical and practical aspects of welding and fabrication relevant to maritime and offshore engineering.

Key areas include:

  • Welding principles and metallurgy
  • SMAW / Stick welding
  • GTAW / TIG welding
  • GMAW / MIG/MAG welding
  • FCAW, where applicable
  • Structural steel welding
  • Pipe welding
  • Marine and offshore fabrication
  • Welding procedures and parameters
  • Welding symbols and drawings
  • Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
  • Procedure Qualification Records (PQR)
  • Welding defects and prevention
  • Visual inspection and basic welding quality control
  • Welding inspection fundamentals
  • Hot-work safety
  • Welding-related hazards and control measures
  • Fabrication, assembly and repair of offshore and marine structures

Where appropriate, practical training may be conducted through workshops, welding laboratories, simulation environments and industry-based learning.

5. Curriculum Development

The Associate Lecturer will:

  • Develop and review teaching materials for Diploma-level Maritime Studies and Offshore Engineering programmes.
  • Prepare lesson plans, presentations, practical exercises, case studies and assessments.
  • Develop competency-based learning activities.
  • Ensure curriculum content reflects current maritime and offshore industry practices.
  • Incorporate real-world offshore incidents, engineering projects and industry case studies into teaching.
  • Assist in reviewing and updating Diploma modules.
  • Contribute to new programme and module development.
  • Map learning outcomes against industry competency requirements and relevant professional standards.

6. Teaching & Learning Methodology

The Associate Lecturer will use a combination of:

  • Classroom lectures
  • Tutorials
  • Laboratory sessions
  • Practical workshops
  • Welding demonstrations
  • Offshore safety simulations
  • Case studies
  • Group projects
  • Industry visits
  • Site-based learning
  • Problem-based learning
  • Competency-based training
  • Digital and blended learning

The lecturer should be able to explain complex engineering and maritime concepts in a clear and practical manner suitable for Diploma students.

7. Student Assessment & Academic Support

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing examinations, assignments, projects and practical assessments.
  • Conducting practical and competency assessments.
  • Marking assignments and examinations.
  • Providing timely and constructive feedback.
  • Monitoring student academic progress.
  • Providing academic and career guidance.
  • Supervising Diploma projects and technical assignments.
  • Supporting students requiring additional academic or technical assistance.
  • Maintaining accurate student assessment and attendance records.

8. Industry Engagement

The Associate Lecturer will maintain active engagement with the maritime and offshore industries and may:

  • Establish relationships with maritime, offshore oil & gas, shipyard, fabrication and engineering companies.
  • Arrange industry visits and workplace learning opportunities.
  • Invite industry practitioners as guest lecturers.
  • Support industry projects and applied research.
  • Participate in maritime and offshore industry seminars and conferences.
  • Identify emerging skills and technologies for incorporation into the Diploma curriculum.
  • Provide technical consultancy or professional training where appropriate.

9. Safety & Quality Assurance

The Associate Lecturer must ensure that all practical training is conducted safely and in accordance with applicable requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting risk assessments for practical activities.
  • Ensuring students follow appropriate PPE requirements.
  • Maintaining safe welding and workshop practices.
  • Ensuring offshore safety training is conducted in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Supporting internal quality assurance and academic audits.
  • Maintaining appropriate training and assessment records.
  • Participating in programme reviews and continuous improvement activities.

10. Minimum Qualifications & Experience

The preferred candidate should possess:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in:
  • Maritime Studies
  • Marine Engineering
  • Offshore Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Naval Architecture
  • Welding Engineering
  • Oil & Gas Engineering
  • or a related discipline.
  • Relevant industry experience in maritime, offshore, marine engineering, shipbuilding, oil & gas or fabrication.
  • Demonstrated teaching or training experience at Diploma or equivalent level.
  • Strong practical knowledge of offshore operations and engineering.

11. Professional & Industry Certifications

The following would be advantageous:

  • OPITO BOSIET
  • OPITO-approved trainer/assessor qualifications, where applicable
  • HUET
  • Offshore survival training
  • Welding certifications such as AWS, CSWIP, IIW/IWS/IWT or equivalent
  • Welding inspection qualifications
  • NDT qualifications
  • Marine/offshore safety qualifications
  • MOM/WSH-related qualifications
  • ACTA, DACE, PGDE, CertEd or equivalent teaching/training qualification

12. Core Competencies

The successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Strong academic and technical knowledge of maritime and offshore engineering.
  • Practical offshore and/or marine industry experience.

  • OPITO BOSIET knowledge and practical experience.

  • Ability to teach Diploma-level students.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong commitment to student development, safety and academic quality.

13. Key Deliverables

The Associate Lecturer will be expected to:

  • Deliver high-quality teaching for the Diploma in Maritime Studies and Offshore Engineering.
  • Deliver specialist modules in offshore safety, OPITO BOSIET-related areas and welding/fabrication.
  • Develop and continuously improve teaching and assessment materials.
  • Conduct practical and competency-based training.
  • Support student projects and industry-based learning.
  • Maintain current knowledge of maritime, offshore and engineering industry developments.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and academic quality assurance.
