About the Role

A leading international professional services organisation is looking for a senior, hands-on technology leader to drive AI, engineering and architecture initiatives across the organisation.

This is a Director-level individual contributor role, suited to a highly capable technologist who can operate strategically while remaining deeply hands-on.

The successful candidate will shape technical direction, design complex solutions and work directly with emerging technologies across AI, LLMs, enterprise search, RAG and modern software engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Define technical strategy and architecture for AI and emerging technology initiatives.
• Design and build solutions using LLMs, RAG, semantic search, vector databases and information retrieval.
• Architect and deliver integrations across SaaS platforms, internal systems, data sources and AI/LLM services.
• Evaluate and implement emerging AI and technology solutions.
• Design scalable approaches to data ingestion, indexing, retrieval, grounding and AI evaluation.
• Work closely with Data Science, IT and business teams to translate complex problems into practical technology solutions.
• Provide technical leadership across architecture, design, development and implementation.
• Conduct hands-on technical research and experimentation with emerging AI, NLP, search and machine learning technologies.
• Review and guide technical designs, code and engineering approaches to ensure high standards of quality, security and scalability.
• Engage directly with technology vendors to assess solutions, integrations and technical roadmaps.
• Stay ahead of developments in Generative AI, LLMs, RAG, search and AI engineering, identifying opportunities to apply them in a real-world environment.

What We're Looking For

• At least 10 of experience in software engineering, solution architecture, AI engineering, platform engineering or a related discipline.
• Proven experience operating at a senior technical leadership level, with the ability to influence technology strategy.
• Strong hands-on experience with AI/ML, LLMs, NLP, enterprise search, semantic search and/or RAG.
• Strong understanding of cloud architecture, APIs, modern software engineering and distributed systems.
• Experience with vector databases, embeddings, information retrieval and AI-enabled search.
• Strong programming and engineering skills, with the ability to move beyond architecture and get hands-on with technology when required.
• Experience designing and delivering complex, enterprise-grade technology solutions.
• Strong technical judgement with the ability to balance innovation, security, scalability and reliability.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence senior technical and business stakeholders.
• Strong curiosity and passion for understanding and applying emerging technologies.

Preferred

• Experience within professional services or highly regulated environments.
• Experience with document intelligence, NLP, document classification or knowledge graphs.
• Experience integrating and extending enterprise SaaS platforms.
• Understanding of AI governance, security and responsible AI.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI, Mathematics or a related discipline.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is exceptionally smart, technically curious and genuinely hands-on.

This is not a traditional management role. The successful candidate will operate at Director level in terms of technical ownership, influence and complexity, but will remain an individual contributor who enjoys getting into the architecture, technology and problem-solving.

The ideal profile could be a Principal Engineer, Distinguished Engineer, Staff/Principal Architect, AI Engineering Leader or senior technical specialist who has the depth to challenge existing thinking and the practical ability to turn ideas into production-ready solutions.
