Our client is a growing technology company building AI and physics-based software to optimize complex industrial processes, with a focus on water and wastewater.

They are looking for a hands-on Process Modeling Engineer to build and calibrate mechanistic models and dynamic simulators in Python. This is a production-focused role, working closely with process engineers to turn real-world physical processes and operating data into models that power their optimization platform.

Responsibilities

• Build equation-oriented mechanistic models in Python
• Develop forward dynamic process simulators
• Translate physical/chemical processes into governing equations and numerical models
• Calibrate and validate models against real-world data
• Build surrogate and physics-informed models for optimization
• Perform parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification
• Troubleshoot modeling and simulation problems
• Write tested, production-grade Python
• Collaborate with process engineers and technical teams globally

Requirements

• MS in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related field; BS with 3+ years relevant experience considered
• Strong applied mathematics: differential equations, numerical methods, linear algebra, optimization
• 3+ years of Python for scientific computing
• Experience building and calibrating simulation/process models against real data
• Strong numerical modeling and scientific computing skills
• Experience with testing and production software development
• Ability to work independently and communicate technical concepts clearly

Preferred Experience

• Pyomo, IDAES, WaterTAP, gPROMS, Aspen Custom Modeler, or CasADi
• IPOPT and large-scale nonlinear optimization
• Membrane/process modeling, fouling, RO/UF, CIP, or backwash dynamics
• Physics-informed ML, surrogate modeling, or model-order reduction
• MPC or reinforcement learning
• Industrial process control
• Parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification
• Water/wastewater treatment
• AI-assisted coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex
