Electrical Manager
Location: Johor, Malaysia
Employment Type: 2 Years Contract
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Engineering & Design Management
- Lead and review electrical engineering and design deliverables for large-scale renewable energy projects, including Single Line Diagrams (SLD), electrical layouts, cable routing and sizing, MV/HV systems, substations, protection and control, earthing and lightning protection, auxiliary power and LV systems.
- Ensure electrical designs are technically sound, coordinated, constructable, and suitable for actual site conditions.
- Review engineering submissions and ensure compliance with applicable IEC, IEEE, Malaysian Standards, utility grid codes, project specifications, and Employer’s Requirements.
- Review and coordinate OEM designs and interfaces covering inverters/PCS, transformers, switchgear, SCADA, protection systems and BESS, where applicable.
- Identify and resolve design gaps, technical risks, interface issues, and constructability concerns before and during construction.
2. Grid Connection & Regulatory Compliance
- Lead electrical activities associated with grid connection and ensure compliance with applicable grid codes and utility requirements.
- Coordinate requirements relating to reactive power, fault ride-through, frequency and active power control, protection settings, communication systems and grid stability.
- Coordinate with relevant authorities, utility companies, grid operators, consultants, EPC contractors and OEMs for inspections, approvals, energisation and synchronisation.
- Support utility witnessing, testing, grid compliance verification, energisation and commercial operation activities.
3. Electrical Construction Management
- Lead and supervise site execution of electrical installation works, including LV/MV/HV systems, cables, substations, transformers, switchgear, protection and control panels, earthing and bonding, telecommunications, SCADA and BESS systems.
- Ensure construction activities are carried out in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) and applicable standards.
- Monitor construction progress and identify technical issues, design clashes, material constraints and constructability challenges that may impact project schedule or cost.
- Coordinate closely with EPC contractors, electrical subcontractors, OEM vendors, consultants and grid utilities to ensure effective project execution.
- Provide timely technical decisions and solutions to minimise delays and maintain construction progress.
4. Testing, Commissioning & Energisation
- Lead and coordinate electrical Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), pre-commissioning, commissioning, energisation and synchronisation activities.
- Ensure all systems, equipment, documentation, permits and safety requirements are fully ready before energisation.
- Develop and coordinate commissioning schedules with EPC contractors, OEMs, consultants and relevant utility/grid operators.
- Review testing and commissioning results and ensure all defects, punch-list items and non-conformances are properly resolved.
- Support the project team in achieving Commercial Operation Date (COD) and successful transition into operations.
5. Project Handover & Technical Support
- Provide technical electrical support throughout construction, commissioning, energisation and project handover.
- Review and verify as-built drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, testing records, commissioning dossiers and other handover documentation.
- Ensure all outstanding electrical defects and punch-list items are closed prior to final handover.
- Support the transition of completed electrical systems and assets from the project/construction team to the Operations & Maintenance team.
Requirements
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Professional engineering certification or relevant industry qualifications will be an advantage.
Experience
- Experience in electrical engineering and project execution, preferably within renewable energy, power generation, utility, EPC or infrastructure projects.
- Strong experience in utility-scale solar PV projects is highly preferred.
- Experience with MV/HV electrical systems, substations, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, SCADA and grid connection.
- Experience in testing, commissioning, energisation and grid synchronisation is essential.
- Exposure to BESS/ESS or hybrid renewable energy projects will be an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience managing EPC contractors, OEMs, consultants and other project stakeholders.
Technical Competencies
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems for solar PV and renewable energy projects.
- Good understanding of MV/HV systems, electrical protection, transformers, switchgear, cable systems, earthing and lightning protection.
- Knowledge of grid connection requirements and utility/grid codes.
- Familiarity with IEC, IEEE, Malaysian Standards and relevant electrical safety requirements.
- Strong understanding of electrical testing, commissioning and energisation procedures.
- Good project management, risk management and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong ability to review engineering drawings, technical specifications and contractor/OEM submissions.
- Good commercial awareness and understanding of project cost, schedule and contractual requirements.
