About the Role
We are building a technology capability that does not sit at arm's length from the institutions it serves. The Lead Forward Deployed Engineering Business Partner embeds directly inside our schools, campuses, and corporate functions to co-develop technology with the people who run them — not for them, but alongside them.
The Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) model originated at Palantir and is now used across the industry to place engineers next to the operational reality of a problem, so solutions are shaped by the ground truth rather than assumptions. Where a traditional product engineer builds “one capability for many customers,” an FDE brings “many capabilities to one customer” — living in the domain, translating ambiguity into working software, and feeding what they learn back into the group’s core platforms.
This is a hybrid role by design: part senior engineer, part trusted business partner. You will spend meaningful time on campus and with business owners, and meaningful time writing and shipping production code.
What You'll Do
Embed & Co-develop
- Partner on the ground. Embed with school leaders, faculty, student-experience teams, HR, and alumni relations to understand how work actually happens — then co-design and build technology that fits that reality.
- Turn ambiguity into working software. Take problems that are ill-defined or where the described need does not match the data and systems on the ground, and rapidly prototype, validate, and ship solutions.
- Own the full lifecycle. Requirements, design, build, integration, deployment, and iteration — with a bias toward getting a usable version in front of real users fast.
- Build the agentic way. Run an AI-native, agentic development lifecycle — orchestrating AI coding agents and tools to compress the path from problem to production, while keeping a human accountable for quality, safety, and outcomes.
Deliver Across the Three Pillars
- Best place to study. Build tools that improve the learner, parent, and campus experience — personalised and holistic learning, student journeys, and support systems that help every learner progress from enrolment to graduation.
- Great place to work. Ship internal platforms and automations that give educators and staff back their time and put the right data at the point of decision.
- Cradle to cradle. Create the systems that carry the relationship beyond graduation — alumni engagement, community, mentorship, giving, and re-enrolment loops.
Lead & Multiply
- Set the FDE standard. As the lead, define how forward-deployed engineering works here — the operating model, the engagement playbook, and the quality bar — and mentor engineers who follow.
- Feed the core platform. Ensure that what is learned and built in one institution is generalised back into reusable group platforms, not left as one-off solutions.
- Raise the group's AI fluency. Establish the patterns, guardrails, and tooling for AI orchestration and agentic development so the wider technology team can build the same way — safely and consistently.
- Scope and prioritise. Make the call on what to build, what to buy, and what to leave alone, balancing urgency for a single business unit against long-term value for the group.
Partner with the Business
- Translate both ways. Be the credible bridge between technology and academic and corporate leadership — fluent enough in each to be trusted by both.
- Build trust, then capability. Remove technical barriers to adoption, demonstrate what is feasible, and help leaders make confident decisions about technology.
Who You Are
Must Have
- A strong software engineer who still ships — comfortable building end-to-end across data, integration, and application layers in modern languages and cloud environments.
- Fluent use of AI orchestration and an agentic development lifecycle — you routinely direct AI coding agents, chain tools and models, and ship production-grade work faster because of it, with clear judgment on where a human must stay in the loop.
- Proven experience embedding with non-technical stakeholders to deliver solutions in ambiguous, evolving problem spaces (FDE, solutions engineering, consulting-plus-build, or a founder / in-house equivalent).
- A track record of taking something from a vague problem statement to a deployed, adopted product — not just a prototype.
- Excellent communication and influence: you earn trust with a head of school and a head of engineering in the same week.
- Sound judgment on scoping, prioritisation, and build-vs-buy under real constraints.
- Leadership presence — you can set direction for a small team and raise the bar around you.
Nice to Have
- Experience in education, EdTech, or another regulated, mission-driven, multi-stakeholder sector.
- Familiarity with data privacy and student-data governance considerations.
- Deep applied experience with AI / LLM-based systems in production, and with evaluating, governing, and scaling agentic workflows across a team.
- Experience across Southeast Asian markets and multi-campus or multi-brand organisations.
How We'll Measure Success
- First 90 days. You have embedded with at least two business units, mapped the highest-value problems against the three pillars, and shipped one solution that real users depend on.
- First year. A repeatable FDE operating model is in place, several deployed solutions are delivering measurable outcomes across the pillars, and reusable capability has been fed back into the group platform.
- Ongoing. Adoption and outcome metrics — not output volume — tied to learner success, staff experience, and alumni engagement.
