Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Counselling, Psychology, Guidance and Counselling, or a related discipline.
A Master's Degree in Counselling or Clinical Psychology is an added advantage.
Registered Counselor with the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia) with a valid Annual Practising Certificate is preferred.
Minimum 2–5 years of counseling experience, preferably in higher education or educational institutions.
Responsibilities
Student Counseling
Provide individual and group counseling sessions to students experiencing academic, emotional, personal, behavioural, or psychological challenges.
Conduct comprehensive assessments of students' mental health and psychosocial needs.
Develop appropriate intervention plans and monitor students' progress.
Maintain accurate and confidential counseling records in accordance with professional ethics and institutional policies.
Offer crisis intervention and immediate support for students experiencing emergencies or high-risk situations.
Identify students requiring specialised treatment and refer them to external healthcare professionals or agencies when necessary.
Student Support and Welfare
Assist students in developing coping strategies, resilience, stress management, and problem-solving skills.
Support students in managing academic stress, adjustment issues, interpersonal conflicts, and career-related concerns.
Provide consultation to faculty members and staff regarding student welfare concerns.
Collaborate with academic departments to support students identified as academically or emotionally at risk.
Mental Health Promotion
Plan, organise, and conduct mental health awareness programmes, workshops, seminars, and campaigns.
Promote wellness initiatives focusing on stress management, emotional intelligence, resilience, and healthy lifestyles.
Develop educational materials and resources related to mental health and student well-being.
Participate in orientation programmes to introduce counseling services to new students.
Crisis Management
Respond appropriately to mental health crises, emergencies, and critical incidents.
Conduct risk assessments involving suicide ideation, self-harm, abuse, or other safety concerns.
Coordinate intervention plans with parents, guardians, healthcare professionals, and relevant authorities where appropriate.
Maintain emergency response procedures related to student psychological well-being.
Administration
Prepare counseling reports, statistical data, and monthly activity reports.
Maintain confidential student counseling files and documentation.
Ensure compliance with institutional policies, legal requirements, and ethical standards.
Monitor counselling service utilisation and recommend improvements.
Collaboration
Work closely with Student Affairs, Academic Departments, Human Resources, International Office, Hostel Management, and other university units.
Build partnerships with hospitals, mental health professionals, government agencies, and non-governmental organisations to facilitate referrals and student support.
Participate in committees related to student welfare, discipline, and wellness.
Continuous Professional Development
Keep abreast of developments in counseling practices, mental health research, and higher education student support.
Attend relevant professional training, conferences, workshops, and seminars.
Maintain professional registration and continuing education requirements where applicable.
