Kumpulan Guthrie Berhad

The Kumpulan Guthrie Group is one of the leading conglomerates in South East Asia. Its businesses are in plantation (oil palm and rubber), property development and manufacturing (rubberwood furniture, rubber products and fabrication).The Group owns fifty-five estates in ten of the thirteen states in Malaysia with twelve palm oil mills and four rubber factories. In Malaysia, the Group’s landbank measures 108,594 hectares. The Group is also developing 60,000 hectares of oil palm plantation on South Sumatra. It also operates in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Liberia and Thailand.

 

The history of the Group dates back to 1821 when Alexander Guthrie first set up a proprietor enterprise - the first British trading company in South East Asia. Guthrie introduced rubber and oil palm in Malaysia in 1896 and 1924 respectively. Malaysian interests bought over Guthrie Corporation Plc. in the famous ‘dawn raid’ on the London Stock Exchange in 1981. Kumpulan Guthrie was made a public company in 1987 and was subsequently listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) in 1989 in what was then the largest public issue in Malaysia. Two subsidiary companies of Kumpulan Guthrie, Highlands & Lowlands Berhad and Guthrie Ropel Berhad are also listed on the KLSE. Highlands & Lowlands Berhad is also listed on the London Stock Exchange.
