Job Description

Responsibilities

Position Overview

The STEM Instructor (Laboratory) is responsible for the effective management and operation of the school's Science laboratories. The role ensures a safe, compliant, and well-organised laboratory environment while providing technical and instructional support for practical lessons. Key responsibilities include laboratory safety and compliance, preparation of experimental materials, maintenance of laboratory equipment and resources, inventory and procurement management, and supporting the delivery of high-quality science education through efficient laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Laboratory Safety & Compliance

·       Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organised laboratory environment in accordance with established safety standards.

·       Ensure laboratory safety rules, emergency procedures, and evacuation routes are prominently displayed and kept up to date.

·       Inspect, maintain, and ensure the safe operation of laboratory apparatus, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

·       Label, store, handle, and manage chemicals, including chemical explosive precursors (EP), in compliance with the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) and all applicable regulations.

·       Respond promptly to chemical spills and ensure the safe handling and disposal of chemical and biological waste.

·       Maintain accurate and up-to-dateSafety Data Sheets (SDS) for all laboratory chemicals.

·       Inspect and maintain laboratorysafety facilities and emergency equipment, including eyewash stations, safetyshowers, fire extinguishers, and first-aid supplies, ensuring they remainoperational and adequately stocked.

2.Laboratory Operations & Instructional Support

·       Prepare laboratory apparatus, stocksolutions, reagents, and experimental materials for practical lessons,assessments, and teacher demonstrations.

·       Provide technical support duringlaboratory sessions and ensure laboratories, workstations, and equipment arecleaned, maintained, and restored after use.

·       Advise teachers and students on thesafe and effective use of laboratory equipment, materials, and experimentalprocedures.

·       Source and procure laboratoryconsumables, fresh experimental materials, and other resources required forpractical lessons and activities.

·       Maintain laboratory teaching aids,scientific models, and specialised instructional resources in good working conditions.

3.Equipment Maintenance & Asset Management

·       Conduct routine risk assessments forlaboratory activities and operations to ensure a safe working environment.

·       Inspect laboratory equipmentregularly, promptly report defective equipment, display appropriate notices,and coordinate repair works with the Facilities Department, including repairsto laboratory gas and water systems.

·       Replace damaged glassware, performminor repairs to laboratory apparatus and equipment, and maintain accuratemaintenance and breakage records.

·       Carry out preventive and scheduledlaboratory maintenance during school holidays, including equipment inspections,stock reviews, cupboard organisation, and maintenance of laboratory benches,fittings, and workspaces.

4.Administration, Inventory & Procurement

·       Maintain accurate laboratory usagerecords, inventory databases, stock registers, and related documentation.

·       Conduct semester-end stocktaking andprepare comprehensive inventory reports for verification by the Head ofDepartment (HOD), Subject Head (SH) and STEM Manager.

·       Source laboratory equipment,consumables, and materials; obtain quotations; and recommend cost-effectivealternatives while maintaining optimal stock levels.

·       Liaise with suppliers to obtainquotations, negotiate purchases, and coordinate the procurement and delivery oflaboratory supplies.

·       Assist with laboratory budgetplanning, expenditure monitoring, and other finance-related administrativeduties.

5.Professional Development & General Responsibilities

·       Participate in professional development programmes, technical training, and relevant learning opportunities to enhance laboratory knowledge and technical competencies.

·       Keep updated of current laboratory safety regulations, health and safety requirements, and developments in science education and laboratory practices.

·       Perform any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Principal, Vice-Principal, Head of Department(HOD), Subject Head (SH), or STEM Manager.
