Mainframe Systems Specialist (Backup & Storage)
Role Summary
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Systems Specialist (Backup & Storage) to administer, maintain, and optimise enterprise mainframe backup infrastructure supporting mission-criticalsystems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the administration of IBM z/OS, CA-1 Tape Management, enterprise backup platforms, tape libraries, and storage infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and recoverable business operations.
The role includes installation, configuration, patch management, performance monitoring, capacity planning, troubleshooting, and vendor coordination for enterprise backup and storage environments. You will work closely with infrastructure, operations, storage, disaster recovery, and application teams to ensure backup integrity, system resilience, and compliance with enterprise standards.
This position is ideal for professionals with strong experience in IBM mainframe environments, enterprise backup technologies, and storage management.
Key Responsibilities
Mainframe Backup Administration
- Administer and maintain enterprise backup solutions supporting IBM z/OS environments.
- Manage CA-1 Tape Management System, ensuring the integrity and availability of backup media and retention policies.
- Configure and maintain backup schedules, policies, and recovery procedures.
- Perform backup validation, restoration testing, and operational health checks.
z/OS Systems Administration
- Administer and support IBM z/OS operating systems and related system utilities.
- Support Job Control Language (JCL) execution and troubleshooting for backup and operational jobs.
- Maintain system configurations and ensure compliance with enterprise operational standards.
- Support routine system maintenance and platform upgrades.
Storage & Tape Management
- Administer enterprise tape management systems and automated tape libraries.
- Manage storage resources including:
- Direct Access Storage Devices (DASD)
- Tape media
- Virtual tape systems
- Enterprise backup storage platforms
- Monitor storage utilisation and optimise backup capacity planning.
Backup Infrastructure Management
- Install, configure, and maintain enterprise backup hardware and software, including:
- CA-1
- Dell EMC Data Domain
- Dell EMC ECS (Elastic Cloud Storage)
- Hitachi Content Gateway (CGX)
- Enterprise Tape Libraries
- Perform software upgrades, security patching, and system hardening.
- Ensure backup infrastructure complies with organisational security and operational policies.
Performance Monitoring & Capacity Planning
- Monitor backup jobs, storage performance, and system availability.
- Analyse backup trends and forecast storage capacity requirements.
- Optimise backup windows and system performance.
- Review system logs and proactively identify operational issues.
Incident & Problem Management
- Investigate and resolve backup failures, storage issues, and infrastructure incidents.
- Perform root cause analysis for backup-related problems.
- Coordinate recovery activities during production incidents.
- Support business continuity and disaster recovery operations.
Vendor & Technical Support
- Liaise with hardware and software vendors to resolve complex technical issues.
- Coordinate software upgrades, firmware updates, and hardware maintenance activities.
- Participate in vendor-supported troubleshooting and problem resolution.
Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity
- Support Disaster Recovery (DR) planning, testing, and simulation exercises.
- Validate backup and restoration procedures.
- Ensure backup environments meet recovery objectives (RPO/RTO).
- Participate in business continuity planning initiatives.
Documentation & Governance
- Prepare and maintain:
- Backup architecture documentation
- Configuration standards
- Recovery procedures
- Operational runbooks
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Capacity planning reports
- Ensure compliance with enterprise governance, security, and audit requirements.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve backup automation, operational efficiency, and storage utilisation.
- Evaluate emerging backup and storage technologies.
- Participate in infrastructure modernisation initiatives.

Education & Experience

- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in IBM mainframe infrastructure administration.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience administering CA-1 Tape Management.
- Experience with enterprise backup hardware and storage platforms.
- Experience supporting high-availability or mission-critical environments is highly desirable.
