Job purpose:
As a Junior Cassandra Database Administrator, you will be part of an expanding international team based at the Kuala Lumpur Center. We are looking for candidates with a broad range of expertise and skills in supporting Cassandra deployments, both on-premises and in cloud environments. Your responsibilities will include day-to-day administration, performance tuning, monitoring, backup/restore, and possessing a solid understanding of NoSQL programming. Additionally, you will mentor other database administrators, sharing your expertise, and collaborate as part of a large database team.
Key activities:
- Help install and set up NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra, Redis) in both cloud and on‑prem environments.
- Do basic monitoring (health checks, disk usage, performance) to keep databases running smoothly.
- Run regular backups and simple housekeeping tasks (cleanup, compaction, archiving).
- Assist in troubleshooting database issues following guidelines from senior DBAs.
- Work with the team to adjust database settings and queries so they use resources efficiently.
- Write down what you do: configuration changes, scripts, and steps taken to fix issues.
- Help with basic performance tuning (indexes, query patterns, data model adjustments).
- Support patching and minor upgrade activities as part of the database lifecycle.
- Learn and apply basic security practices (user roles, permissions, encryption).
- Take part in setting up replication and simple disaster recovery procedures.
Formal education:
- Recognized university or college qualification (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field).
- Beginner-level training or certification in NoSQL database technologies is beneficial.
Specialist knowledge (work experience, further qualification):
Essential Skills:
- Up to 3 years of experience in No SQL database administration.
- Fundamental knowledge of Apache Cassandra and its database structure, replication, and scaling functionality.
- Familiarity with basic concepts of NoSQL(MySQL, Mongo, MariaDB) databases and key differences from relational databases.
- Basic understanding of cloud database environments, Google Cloud, or Azure Cloud.
- Willingness to learn performance tuning and troubleshooting techniques for Cassandra.
Additional Preferred Skills (technical, methodology and business):
- Knowledge of another database technology (such as PostgreSQL, Oracle) is an advantage.
- Basic knowledge of IT security principles related to database systems.
- Eagerness to learn and explore evolving database trends and technologies.
