Job Description

Responsibilities

Our Mission: Reclaim Mental Energy

For today's top performers, the most valuable resource is mental energy. Yet, it's drained every morning by a single, frustrating decision: "What should I wear?" This is more than an inconvenience; it's a daily tax on confidence and focus.

At Checkmate, our mission is to eliminate that tax. We believe technology should bring intelligence and simplicity to personal style, empowering professionals to start their day with clarity and purpose. We're looking for a data scientist to build the AI that makes this possible.

The Role: The Architect of Our Intelligence

As our AI Data Scientist, you will be the analytical heart of our company. You won't be a cog in a machine; you will be a member of the founding team, responsible for building the 'smarts' behind our entire platform. Your primary focus will be on the end-to-end lifecycle of the machine learning models that power our user experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop & Train Core ML Models: Lead the development of our core recommendation engine. This includes data preprocessing, feature engineering, model selection, training, and continuous evaluation to improve performance on style recommendations and outfit generation.
  • Model Iteration and Experimentation: Design and execute experiments (including A/B tests) to validate new modeling approaches and features. Continuously iterate on models based on performance metrics and user feedback.
  • Drive Data Strategy for AI: Define the specific data required to train effective models. Analyze user interactions to find patterns that can be used as features, and identify new opportunities for personalization.
  • ML Operations (MLOps): Work with engineering to deploy models into our production environment. Establish processes for monitoring model performance, detecting data drift, and managing the retraining pipeline.

Who We're Looking For: A Hands-On Model Builder

This is the perfect role for a talented final-year student or recent graduate with a passion for applying machine learning to solve real-world problems.

Requirements:

  • Education: Pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Core AI/ML Skills (Essential):
  • Strong proficiency in Python and its data science ecosystem (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn).
  • Hands-on experience building and training models with at least one major deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
  • Solid understanding of SQL for data extraction and manipulation.
  • The Most Important "Qualification":
  • A GitHub, Kaggle profile, or a portfolio of personal projects that clearly demonstrates your ability to train, evaluate, and iterate on machine learning models.
  • Preferred Skills (Nice-to-Haves):
  • Applied knowledge of recommendation systems (e.g., collaborative filtering, content-based) or computer vision for image analysis.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (especially Firebase/Google Cloud) and model deployment.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Matplotlib, Seaborn).

What We Offer: More Than a Job, It's a Partnership

  • Competitive Salary + Equity Incentive: You will receive a competitive monthly salary. In addition, as a core member of our founding team, you will receive a foundational equity grant, because we believe everyone who helps build the company should share in its long-term success.
  • End-to-End Responsibility: You will lead the entire data science function, from model ideation and training to deployment and analysis, directly influencing our product strategy.
  • Flexibility & Trust: We are a results-oriented team offering a modern work environment. This includes a hybrid model, flexible hours, and negotiable work-from-home arrangements.
  • Direct Mentorship & Impact: Work directly with the founders and see your models and insights immediately influence business and product decisions.
  • A Career Accelerator: This is a chance to grow with a product from day one and build a data-driven culture from scratch.

How to Apply

If you’re excited to build the intelligent core of our product, we would love to hear from you.
