Position Summary
The Lead Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, integration, testing, commissioning, and operational support of data-centre control and monitoring systems. The role leads controls engineering activities for BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, HVAC controls, electrical monitoring, and other critical infrastructure systems to ensure high availability, energy efficiency, resilience, and safe operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, and critical-environment control systems.
- Review control architecture, network topology, sequences of operation, points lists, schematics, and cause-and-effect matrices.
- Develop and review controls specifications, control philosophies, alarm strategies, and functional design documents.
- Coordinate controls requirements with electrical, mechanical, ICT, security, fire-protection, and facility-management teams.
- Review vendor drawings, technical submittals, method statements, inspection plans, and commissioning procedures.
- Ensure integration of chillers, cooling towers, pumps, CRAH/CRAC units, AHUs, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, PDUs, meters, and fuel systems.
- Define alarm priorities, thresholds, delays, escalation routes, trending requirements, and graphical-user-interface standards.
- Lead control-panel inspections, factory acceptance tests and site acceptance tests.
- Support installation verification, point-to-point testing, loop checks, functional performance testing, and integrated systems testing.
- Validate equipment failover, redundancy, automatic transfer, emergency shutdown, and recovery sequences.
- Troubleshoot communication, programming, instrumentation, sensor, actuator, and system-integration issues.
- Manage interfaces using BACnet, Modbus, SNMP, OPC, MQTT and other applicable protocols.
- Ensure controls networks comply with cybersecurity, access-control, backup, recovery, and change-management requirements.
- Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, reliability, and operational resilience.
- Maintain accurate as-built drawings, software backups, asset registers, testing records, and operating documentation.
- Support incident investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and lessons-learned reviews.
- Provide technical leadership, workload planning, mentoring, and quality oversight for controls engineers and contractors.
- Support client meetings and provide technical progress, risk, testing, and commissioning reports.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, local regulations, safety requirements, and applicable data-centre standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Control, Automation, Mechanical, or Mechatronics Engineering.
- Approximately 8–12 years of controls or automation experience, including significant experience in data centres or other mission-critical facilities.
- Strong knowledge of BMS, EPMS, PLC, SCADA, HVAC controls, electrical monitoring, and industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with control-system design, installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of data-centre redundancy concepts such as N, N+1, 2N and concurrently maintainable systems.
- Knowledge of critical electrical and mechanical infrastructure, including UPS systems, generators, switchgear, chillers and precision cooling.
- Ability to interpret electrical single-line diagrams, P&IDs, control schematics, network drawings, and equipment sequences.
- Strong leadership, coordination, documentation, analytical, and client-communication skills.
