Job Description

Responsibilities

As an Associate in Hong Kong’s Investment Funds group, you will provide technically sound offshore legal advice on a range of investment fund issues and products, specifically focusing on Cayman and/or BVI laws (although it is not essential that you have practised these laws directly). The team also gets involved in corporate transactions including downstream private equity deals, M&A and restructurings.

Lead counsel experience is an advantage. You should have an intimate knowledge of hedge fund, fund of fund and private equity fund structures. We will also consider candidates without direct funds experience who have M&A/corporate experience. The structures you will be involved with will include companies, limited partnerships, LLCs and unit trust structures.

Regulatory experience around investment fund products in Asia would also be a benefit, although this is not crucial. You will also be expected to build and maintain productive working relationships with clients and intermediaries alike.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing technically sound legal work and technical advice to clients.
  • Responsible for the quality of client services provided by self and direct reports.
  • Responsible for building and maintaining productive working relationships with clients.
  • Responsible for the preparation of fee matter estimates and quotations.
  • Responsible for ensuring effective management of time, effort and resources in order to generate maximum efficiencies.
  • Over time, developing a client base which regards you as their trusted advisor.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • 3-5 years post qualification experience, ideally in the funds area, although we will consider corporate, commercial or finance experience as well.
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills.
  • Presents effective arguments to influence others and achieve negotiated solutions.
  • Demonstrates commercial awareness and understands the impact of decisions and actions on the business.
  • Fluent spoken English and Mandarin is preferred.
