Job Description

Responsibilities

The CNC Tool Room In-Charge is responsible for managing all tooling activities to ensure uninterrupted production. This role oversees tooling inventory, procurement, maintenance, presetting, calibration, and distribution while ensuring tools are available, cost-effective, and maintained to the required quality standards. The position also drives continuous improvement initiatives to reduce tooling costs and improve machining efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Tooling Management

  • Manage the daily operations of the CNC Tool Room.
  • Ensure all cutting tools, holders, collets, fixtures, gauges, and accessories are available for production.
  • Issue and receive tooling according to production requirements.
  • Maintain proper tool identification, storage, and traceability.

Inventory Control

  • Monitor tooling stock levels and maintain minimum and maximum inventory.
  • Perform regular stock audits and cycle counts.
  • Prevent shortages and eliminate excess or obsolete inventory.
  • Maintain accurate tooling records in the ERP or inventory management system.

Tool Presetting and Maintenance

  • Prepare and preset tools for CNC machining.
  • Inspect returned tools for wear or damage.
  • Coordinate tool regrinding, recoating, and replacement.
  • Ensure tool holders and accessories are clean and properly maintained.

Purchasing and Supplier Coordination

  • Raise tooling purchase requests.
  • Coordinate with suppliers for quotations, delivery schedules, and technical support.
  • Evaluate new tooling solutions for improved productivity and cost savings.
  • Support supplier performance evaluations.
  • Monitor tooling consumption and monthly tooling costs.
  • Analyse tool life and implement improvements to extend tool life.
  • Standardize tooling wherever possible.
  • Lead tooling cost reduction projects through optimization, alternative tooling, and process improvements.
  • Provide immediate tooling support to CNC machining operations.
  • Troubleshoot tooling-related machining issues.
  • Recommend optimal cutting tools and machining parameters.
  • Coordinate with Process Engineers and CNC Programmers for new product introductions.
  • Maintain tooling database and tool assembly records.
  • Prepare monthly tooling usage and cost reports.
  • Update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and tooling work instructions.

Quality and Safety

  • Ensure all tooling complies with quality standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized Tool Room using 5S principles.
  • Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
  • Support ISO quality management requirements.

Team Leadership

  • Supervise Tool Room personnel.
  • Train machinists and technicians on proper tooling handling.
  • Allocate daily work and monitor performance.
  • Conduct regular toolbox meetings and continuous improvement activities.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree or a related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in CNC machining or Tool Room operations.
  • Experience with milling, turning, and cutting tool technologies.
  • Knowledge of CNC tooling systems (Sandvik, Kennametal, Seco, Mitsubishi, Iscar, Sumitomo, etc.).
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with tool presetting equipment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and support multiple production lines.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of cutting parameters and machining optimization.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with tool presetting equipment.

  • Approve tooling issuance and replacement.
  • Recommend tooling purchases and standardization.
  • Stop tooling that does not meet quality or safety requirements.
  • Coordinate with engineering and production teams on tooling improvements.
