Role Description The Welding Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Penang, Malaysia. This role involves developing and optimizing welding processes, including laser and arc welding, to meet production, safety, and quality requirements. The Welding Engineer will prepare welding procedures, review engineering drawings, select appropriate materials and methods, and support the implementation of new technologies on the shop floor. Day-to-day tasks include overseeing welding activities, conducting welding inspections, troubleshooting welding issues, coordinating with production and quality teams, and documenting process improvements. The role also includes training production personnel on welding best practices, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and optimize welding procedures and manufacturing processes.
  • Prepare and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
  • Ensure welding activities comply with applicable standards such as AWS, ASME, ISO, API, or customer specifications.
  • Provide technical support to production teams on welding processes, equipment, and materials.
  • Investigate welding defects and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Conduct root cause analysis for welding-related quality issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Coordinate welding trials, process validations, and new product introductions (NPI).
  • Monitor welding parameters and ensure adherence to approved welding procedures.
  • Work closely with Quality Assurance, Production, and Project teams to meet customer requirements and production schedules.
  • Evaluate and recommend welding equipment, consumables, fixtures, and automation solutions.
  • Support internal and external audits related to welding processes.
  • Train and provide technical guidance to welders and production personnel.


Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in welding engineering within a manufacturing, fabrication, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes such as GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW, FCAW, and SAW.
  • Familiarity with welding standards and codes.
  • Experience in preparing WPS, PQR, and WPQ documentation.
  • Knowledge of welding metallurgy, heat treatment, distortion control, and non-destructive testing (NDT).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, and technical specifications.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Good communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications. Knowledge of CAD software is an advantage.
