Job Description

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Superintendent, Technical is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective technical management of assigned vessels. The role oversees planned maintenance, vessel performance, repairs, statutory compliance, dry-docking projects, and provides technical support to shipboard personnel while ensuring compliance with international maritime regulations and company standards.

Key Responsibilities

1) Vessel Technical Management

  • Monitor the day-to-day technical operations and machinery performance of assigned vessels.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Masters and Chief Engineers.
  • Minimise vessel downtime through effective troubleshooting and timely technical intervention.
  • Conduct onboard technical inspections and vessel visits as required.

2) Planned Maintenance System (PMS)

  • Plan, implement, monitor and continuously improve the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).
  • Review maintenance records and recommend improvements to enhance fleet reliability.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules are completed in accordance with company procedures.

3) Spare Parts & Stores Management

  • Review and process requisitions for spare parts, consumables and technical stores.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure cost-effective procurement within approved budgets.
  • Maintain accurate records of spare parts and inventory.

4) Statutory & Classification Compliance

  • Ensure vessels comply with applicable IMO, Flag State, Port State and Classification Society requirements.
  • Coordinate statutory, class and regulatory surveys within the required validity periods.
  • Maintain vessel certificates, technical records, drawings and operational manuals.

5) Technical Repairs & Shore Assistance

  • Coordinate, supervise and monitor repair works carried out by shipyards and shore contractors.
  • Source repair quotations, evaluate proposals and issue purchase orders (POs).
  • Monitor repair progress to ensure work is completed safely, on schedule and within budget.

6) Dry Docking Management

  • Prepare dry-docking specifications and repair scopes.
  • Evaluate quotations and recommend suitable shipyards and contractors.
  • Coordinate dry-docking projects from planning through completion.
  • Monitor repair progress, control project costs and timelines, and prepare post dry-docking reports.

7) Vessel Performance Monitoring

  • Monitor vessel operational performance, machinery efficiency and bunker consumption.
  • Analyse technical performance data and recommend improvements to optimise fleet efficiency.

8) Inspections, Audits & Incident Investigation

  • Assist during Oil Major inspections (SIRE and Non-SIRE), technical audits and vessel inspections.
  • Investigate machinery failures and marine incidents involving hull and machinery.
  • Perform root cause analysis and recommend corrective and preventive actions.

9) Crew Technical Support

  • Evaluate the technical competency and performance of shipboard engineers.
  • Participate in briefing and debriefing sessions for Masters and Chief Engineers.
  • Provide technical coaching and support to vessel personnel where required.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • 1st Class Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited); or
  • 2nd Class Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited), Diploma in Marine Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years' experience as a Technical Superintendent or in a similar technical management role.
  • Previous sea-going experience as a Chief Engineer or Senior Marine Engineer with at least a 2nd Class Engineer Certificate of Competency.
  • Experience in the maritime, shipping, or oil & gas industry is an added advantage.
  • Hands-on experience in dry docking, vessel repairs, and maintenance projects is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong technical knowledge of marine engineering, vessel maintenance, and ship repair.
  • Sound understanding of the ISM Code, ISPS Code, Flag State requirements, Classification Society rules, and other applicable statutory regulations.
  • Strong leadership, supervisory, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to travel and attend vessels locally and overseas when required.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with shipboard personnel, contractors, and external stakeholders.
  • 2nd Class Marine Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited), Diploma in Marine Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
