About Us

We are a software, platform and data engineering team under the Joint Intelligence Command of the Digital and Intelligence Service. We build software systems that support intelligence operations and enable users to process, analyse and act on information in a timely, reliable and secure manner.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will lead the design, development and sustainment of software systems that support operational users. You will work closely with stakeholders to understand user workflows, clarify requirements, assess technical feasibility and guide the delivery of software solutions. You will be part of a team building software for real operational needs, with direct access to users and stakeholders. Your work will contribute to how mission software is designed, delivered, deployed and sustained within the Digital and Intelligence Service.

Who We Are Looking For

You will be expected to contribute hands-on while also providing technical leadership, reviewing architecture and code, shaping engineering practices, and mentoring engineers. This role is suited for an engineer who is comfortable working across product discovery, system design, full-stack

development, testing, deployment and production support.

What You Will Do

Lead Software Design and Delivery

• Design, develop and maintain software systems aligned to operational needs.
• Translate user needs into requirements, technical designs and delivery plans.
• Build full-stack applications across all layers, assess feasibility and identify risks.
• Balance delivery speed with quality, security and long-term supportability.

Provide Technical Leadership

• Lead technical discussions with engineers and stakeholders.
• Drive decisions through design documentation, architecture diagrams and code reviews.
• Guide engineers on software design, API design, data modelling and system integration.
• Provide technical direction across the full delivery lifecycle.

Strengthen Engineering Practices

• Establish sound practices for source control, testing, release management and CI/CD.
• Improve test coverage across unit, integration, end-to-end and regression testing.
• Contribute to reusable templates, documentation and engineering standards.
• Support secure-by-design and reliable-by-design development practices.

Support Production-Grade Systems

• Prepare systems for secure enterprise deployment using containerisation, Kubernetes/OpenShift and GitOps.
• Support production readiness, service management and issue lifecycle management.
• Troubleshoot issues across code, infrastructure, configuration, data and integration layers.
• Drive continuous improvement through incident learnings and operational feedback.

Mentor and Develop Engineers

• Coach junior and mid-level engineers through pair programming and technical reviews.
• Build capability in software design, implementation quality and testing discipline.
• Promote disciplined engineering practices and shared ownership across the team.

What You Will Bring

• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, including experience leading technical delivery or mentoring engineers.
• Strong hands-on experience designing, developing and maintaining software systems.
• Experience building distributed systems, microservices or modular service-oriented applications.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, with willingness to work across languages such as TypeScript, Java, C# or similar.
• Experience with frontend and backend development, including APIs, databases and application integration.
• Experience with automated testing and software quality practices.
• Experience with containerisation and deployment using Docker, Kubernetes or OpenShift.
• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience applying structured software delivery practices, including agile planning, incremental delivery, release coordination, quality gates, service governance and production support.
