Gallery Assistant
Indian Heritage Gallery & Cultural Centre (IHCC)
Location: George Town, Penang
Reports To: Gallery Manager / Operations Manager
Position Summary
The Gallery Assistant is responsible for providing visitors with a welcoming and memorable experience while supporting the daily operations of the Indian Heritage Gallery & Cultural Centre. The role includes visitor services, guided tours, ticketing, safeguarding exhibits, maintaining gallery standards, and assisting with cultural events and educational programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Experience
* Welcome and assist all visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
* Provide information about the Gallery, exhibits, heritage collections, and cultural programmes.
* Conduct guided tours for individuals, schools, tour groups, and VIP guests.
* Ensure visitors comply with gallery rules to protect artefacts and exhibits.
Gallery Operations
* Open and close the gallery according to standard operating procedures.
* Monitor exhibition areas to ensure the safety and security of artefacts.
* Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of exhibition spaces.
* Report maintenance, security, or safety issues immediately.
Ticketing & Retail
* Operate the ticketing and Point-of-Sale (POS) system.
* Process admissions, memberships, and souvenir sales.
* Balance daily cash collections and prepare sales reports.
* Assist with inventory management of souvenirs and gallery merchandise.
Events & Programmes
* Assist in organising exhibitions, cultural events, workshops, lectures, and festivals.
* Prepare event spaces before and after programmes.
* Support visiting dignitaries, sponsors, media representatives, and tour operators.
Collections Support
* Assist in the installation and removal of exhibitions under supervision.
* Handle artefacts carefully according to established procedures.
* Help maintain records and inventories of exhibits and gallery materials.
Administrative Duties
* Answer telephone calls, emails, and visitor enquiries.
* Maintain visitor statistics and daily attendance records.
* Assist with bookings for schools, tour groups, and private visits.
* Perform other administrative duties assigned by management.
Skills & Competencies
* Excellent communication skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
* Ability to communicate in Tamil, Mandarin, or other languages is an added advantage.
* Friendly, professional, and customer-oriented.
* Passion for Indian heritage, history, culture, and education.
* Good organisational and time management skills.
* Basic computer literacy (Microsoft Office, email, POS systems).
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions
* Five or six-day work week (as scheduled).
* Must be willing to work weekends, public holidays, and during special events.
* May be required to stand for extended periods and assist in moving exhibition materials.
