Contract Manager (Substation Projects)

Overview
We are seeking an experienced Contract Manager to oversee all contractual and commercial aspects of substation construction projects in Johor. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing contracts throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring contractual compliance, mitigating commercial risks, administering claims and variations, and supporting successful project delivery.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in contract management within power, utility, transmission and distribution (T&D), EPC, or infrastructure projects, with specific experience in substation construction being highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Contract Administration
- Lead the administration and management of project contracts from award through project close-out.
- Review, interpret, and manage contractual obligations, rights, and responsibilities.
- Ensure compliance with contract terms, project specifications, and company policies.
- Maintain contract records, correspondence, and contractual documentation.
Commercial Management
- Support project teams in managing commercial matters and contractual risks.
- Monitor project costs, commitments, and financial exposures.
- Evaluate contractual implications of project changes and commercial decisions.
- Provide commercial advice to project management and leadership teams.
Claims & Variations Management
- Prepare, review, and negotiate variation orders, extension of time (EOT) claims, and contractual notices.
- Assess subcontractor and supplier claims and recommend appropriate actions.
- Lead dispute avoidance and resolution strategies where necessary.
- Ensure all claims and variations are properly documented and submitted within contractual timelines.
Risk Management
- Identify contractual and commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Develop mitigation strategies to protect project and company interests.
- Advise project teams on contractual obligations and potential liabilities.
- Support contract negotiations to achieve favorable commercial outcomes.
Stakeholder Coordination
- Liaise with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and project teams on contractual matters.
- Participate in commercial and contractual meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
- Support project managers in resolving contractual issues and maintaining positive client relationships.
Reporting & Governance
- Prepare regular commercial and contractual reports for senior management.
- Track claims, variations, disputes, and contract performance metrics.
- Ensure contract governance processes are followed throughout project execution.
- Support audits and compliance reviews as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Law, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 8–12 years of experience in contract management, commercial management, or quantity surveying.
- Proven experience working on substation, transmission & distribution, power generation, utility, EPC, or infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of contract administration, claims management, and commercial risk assessment.
- Experience with FIDIC, PAM, NEC, EPC, or other standard forms of contract.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing contracts for HV, EHV, or GIS/AIS substation projects.
- Professional membership with RICS, CIArb, CIOB, or equivalent is advantageous.
- Experience working with utility providers, power developers, EPC contractors, or multinational organizations.
- Familiarity with TNB and utility project requirements will be an advantage.
