Overview*
A Functional Prosthetist provides functional upper limb prosthetic fitting service as an adjunct to the specialty of hand and reconstructive microsurgery. He/ she is to provide pre-and post-prosthetic counselling, evaluate patient and recommend correct prosthesis; to fabricate and produce fit high-quality prostheses for upper limb amputations and follow-up, as well as to expand prosthetic service by providing functional prosthesis for varying levels of hand amputations. He /she is to work alongside with our current aesthetic prosthetist to enable the delivery of comprehensive prosthetic solutions that optimize patient outcomes and satisfaction. Beyond clinical practice, a Functional Prosthetist will also be involved in research studies, teaching as well as other relevant operations and administration.
Job Responsibilities*
You will be responsible for the following:
Primary Responsibilities and Duties (80%)
- Clinical Practice
- Provide pre-and post-prosthetic counselling, evaluate patient physical/ stump conditions/ expectations and recommends the correct prosthesis as medically indicated in a clinic setting.
- Fabricate/ produce and fit high-quality prostheses for upper limb amputations, including follow-up and repair/ replacement of any worn/ damaged prostheses.
- Expand prosthetic service by providing functional prosthesis for varying levels of hand amputations:
- Multiple amputations through distal interphalangeal joint and the phalanges: passive functional prosthesis and body powered prosthesis
- Amputations through metacarpophalangeal joints and transmetacarpals: body powered prosthesis, externally powered prosthesis
- Thumb amputations: body powered prosthesis
- Below elbow amputation: body and externally powered prosthesis
- Organisational and Operations Excellence
- Run and upkeep of a self-contained and functioning prosthetic laboratory to ensure smooth service delivery.
- Perform inventory management.
- Manage department operational and service performances.
- To meet requirements for medico-legal, clinical and work safety enterprise risks, emergency responses, crisis management and service qualities.
- Manage manpower plans to support strategic and operational needs.
- Leadership and Management Excellence
- Take lead and strive for service and programme excellence.
- Manage policies and procedures to direct operations and service provision.
- Manage staff/ team and their performance. Provide mentorship for the staff/ team.
- Initiate and facilitate organisational changes and business transformation initiatives.
Secondary Responsibilities and Duties (20%)
- Take part in or lead academic or research study in the department.
- Participate and drive continuous patient service improvement and risk management.
- Teach and mentor medical students if needed.
- Any other duties as required by Head of Department.
Requirements*
Qualification Required and Area of Discipline
- Minimum a Degree in Science with postgraduate certificate in Prosthetics. A Master in Science is preferred.
Required Competencies And Capabilities
- Minimum 2-3 years of clinical experience in producing and fitting prosthesis.
- Experience in R&D work in prosthetics is preferred, especially functional prosthesis.
- Able to work well with doctors and the rest of the colleagues.
- Possess good interpersonal skills and communication skills.
