Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join our growing team developing diamond-based quantum and optomechanical platforms. The primary focus of this role is develop diamond nanofabrication capability in NUS targeting optomechanical and photonic applications. This includes the design, fabrication, and characterization of diamond nanostructures and devices. Experience with NV-center-based quantum imaging will be a strong secondary advantage, particularly for translating fabricated diamond devices towards sensing and imaging novel materials.

The successful candidate will play a key role in building up an ambitious research programme at the interface of diamond nanofabrication, Brillouin/cavity optomechanics, and quantum technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diamond nanofabrication: Develop and optimize processes for fabricating single-crystal diamond nanostructures, including waveguides, cavities, optomechanical resonators, nanopillars, and related devices.
  • Device design and characterization: Work on the design, simulation, fabrication, and optical/mechanical characterization of diamond photonic and optomechanical devices.
  • Process development: Establish robust fabrication workflows involving lithography, dry etching, thin-film processing, metallization, release/quasi-release/release-free processes, and surface treatment.
  • Optomechanical applications: Contribute to experiments involving Brillouin physics/light–matter interactions in nanostructured diamond.
  • NV imaging integration: Support the development or use of NV-center imaging platforms where relevant, including widefield or scanning-probe diamond microscopy of novel materials and devices.
  • Team leadership and collaboration: Work closely with PhD students, research engineers, and undergraduates, and help lead/guide junior team members in fabrication, device design, and experimental methods.
  • Cross-disciplinary research: Engage with related areas such as quantum materials, magnetism, integrated photonic circuits, and quantum measurements of spin and/or phonon to identify new applications including quantum sensing, transduction and interconnects.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to lead diamond nanofabrication and diamond imaging efforts in a growing quantum engineering laboratory.
  • Access to a multidisciplinary research environment spanning nanofabrication, photonics, optomechanics, Brillouin physics, and NV quantum sensing.
  • A hands-on role in building experimental capabilities and shaping the technical direction of a new research programme.
  • Opportunities to publish high-impact research and develop independent research ideas.
  • Collaboration with postdocs, PhD students, engineers, and external partners across academia and industry.
  • Professional growth in both fundamental quantum science and applied quantum technology development.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements

  • PhD in physics, engineering, materials science, or a related discipline.
  • Strong experience in nanofabrication, preferably involving diamond, wide-bandgap materials, photonic devices, MEMS/NEMS, or optomechanical structures.
  • Familiarity with cleanroom processes such as electron-beam lithography, photolithography, reactive ion etching, ICP-RIE, thin-film deposition, lift-off, and surface cleaning.
  • Experience with optical or optomechanical device characterization is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of diamond photonics, cavity optomechanics, Brillouin scattering, phononic devices, or integrated quantum photonics would be advantageous.
  • Experience with NV-center-based imaging, widefield microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, pulse-sequences, is desirable but not strictly required.
  • Ability to design experiments, troubleshoot fabrication challenges, analyse data, and communicate results clearly.
  • Strong publication record and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Dynamic, adaptable, and motivated to contribute to the build-up of a new interdisciplinary research laboratory.
  • Open to Fixed Term Contract.
