Job Summary:
To provide technical and practical support to the Design & Technology Department by preparing materials, maintaining equipment, and ensuring a safe, well-resourced workshop environment. The DT Technician supports teaching and learning by enabling high-quality practical lessons and ensuring smooth day-to-day workshop operations.
Key Responsibilities
I. Workshop Preparation & Support
- Prepare materials, tools, and equipment for practical DT lessons.
- Support teachers during practical sessions when required.
- Assist in setting up machinery, tools, CAD/CAM equipment, and project workstations.
- Ensure all practical areas are ready before lessons begin.
II. Health & Safety
- Maintain a safe workshop environment in compliance with school and legal safety standards.
- Conduct regular safety checks on tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Ensure safe storage and handling of materials and chemicals (if applicable).
- Support risk assessments and report any hazards or defects immediately.
III. Equipment & Resource Management
- Maintain, repair, and service DT tools, machines, and equipment where appropriate.
- Manage inventory of materials, tools, and consumables.
- Assist in ordering supplies and maintaining stock levels.
- Ensure efficient use of resources and minimise waste.
IV. Technical Support
- Provide technical assistance in areas such as:
- Product design and prototyping
- CAD/CAM (e.g. laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC if applicable)
- Resistant materials and workshop machinery
- Support students in the safe and correct use of equipment.
V. Student Support
- Assist students during practical work under teacher supervision.
- Encourage safe working practices and responsible use of tools.
- Help supervise practical activities when required.
VI. General & Administrative Duties
- Maintain records of equipment maintenance and safety checks.
- Support departmental organisation and resource planning.
- Assist in preparing displays and exhibitions of student work.
- Contribute to a positive and safe learning environment.
- Support extracurricular activities such as STEM clubs, design competitions, and school events.
- Uphold the school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the department
Qualifications
- Diploma or Degree in Engineering, Design & Technology, Technical Education, or a related field (preferred).
- Relevant technical certifications in workshop machinery, fabrication tools, or related areas (advantageous).
- Experience working in a workshop/lab, technical, manufacturing, or educational environment.
- Experience supporting teaching and learning in a school environment is an advantage.
- Proficiency or experience with CAD software such as Fusion 360 or AutoCAD.
