Junior Chef – Job Scope

Position Summary

The Junior Chef assists in the preparation, cooking, and presentation of food items while maintaining high standards of food quality, hygiene, and kitchen operations. The role supports senior kitchen staff in ensuring smooth daily kitchen operations and delivering consistent food quality.

Key Responsibilities1. Food Preparation & Cooking

  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of menu items according to established recipes and standards.
  • Prepare ingredients, including washing, cutting, portioning, and storing food items.
  • Ensure food is prepared and presented consistently to company standards.

2. Kitchen Operations

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstations, kitchen equipment, and storage areas.
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is properly used and maintained.
  • Assist in receiving, checking, and storing deliveries and supplies.
  • Support stock rotation using the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) method.

3. Food Safety & Hygiene

  • Adhere to all food safety, hygiene, and sanitation regulations.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and labeling of food products.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment at all times.
  • Follow workplace health and safety procedures.

4. Quality Control

  • Ensure ingredients and finished products meet quality standards.
  • Report any food quality, equipment, or safety issues to the Head Chef or Kitchen Supervisor.
  • Minimize food wastage through proper handling and portion control.

5. Team Support

  • Work closely with kitchen team members to ensure smooth service operations.
  • Assist colleagues during peak periods and special events.
  • Follow instructions from the Head Chef, Sous Chef, or Kitchen Supervisor.
  • Participate in training and development programs to enhance culinary skills.

6. Inventory Support

  • Assist with stock counts and inventory management.
  • Monitor ingredient levels and notify supervisors of replenishment needs.
  • Help maintain accurate inventory records and storage practices.

Requirements

  • Basic culinary training or relevant kitchen experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of food preparation techniques and kitchen operations.
  • Understanding of food safety and hygiene standards.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and develop culinary skills.
  • Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays when required.
