Job Description

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

SSY is one of the world’s leading shipbroking and freight advisory firms, with offices across London, Singapore, Geneva, and beyond.

We’re growing our global Technology team with a new role focused on applying AI to reshape how our teams work and deliver smarter capabilities to our clients.

This is a hands-on role for someone who wants to build real tools used every day. You’ll work directly with the people using your tools, iterate quickly and see the impact of your work firsthand.

No maritime experience required. We’ll teach you the domain. You bring technical sharpness, curiosity about AI, and a bias for building.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

Improve how the business operates

·        Identify inefficiencies in existing workflows

·        Design and implement AI-assisted solutions

·        Automate repetitive work to free up expert time

·        Work directly with business users to understand real needs

·        Drive adoption of the tools you build

Build new products and features

·        Develop AI-powered internal tools and client-facing features

·        Contribute across the full lifecycle: idea → build → deploy

·        Bring ideas, not just tickets

TECH STACK

Core

·        TypeScript/ JavaScript

·        Node.js (backend)

·        PostgreSQL

·        APIs (designing and consuming)

·        React/Next.js (or willingness to get up to speed quickly)

Nice to have

·        Python

·        Docker /containerization

·        GraphQL

·        C#

AI APPROACH – Smart use of AI Tools – not blind reliance

We use AI tools heavily, but we don’t outsource thinking to them.

They are accelerators, not decision-makers.

You are expected to understand, review, and test everything you ship. If it goes to production, you own it. Good judgement matters more than speed.

Knowing when to use AI, when to challenge it, and when to ignore it entirely is part of the job.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Background

·        Computer Science degree (undergraduate or master’s)

·        Graduate level, ideally with 1–2 years of hands-on commercial experience

Skills

·        Solid understanding of the current AI landscape and practical use cases

·        Strong fundamentals across React, TypeScript, Node.js, PostgreSQL

·        Experience with APIs (REST, GraphQL)

·        Familiarity with Python, Docker, or modern web frameworks is a plus

·        Experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Claude, etc.), embeddings, or AI workflows is highly desirable

Working style

·        Proactive: spots problems and opportunities without being asked

·        Comfortable working directly with non-technical stakeholders

·        Comfortable in a globally distributed, async-first team

·        Pragmatic: focused on solving problems, not defending a specific stack

·        Uses AI tools to move faster, but takes full ownership of output

Mindset

Language-agnostic and problem-first. Comfortable picking up new tools as needed rather than sticking to one stack.

Maritime experience

Not required. We’ll provide full domain context. If you need help, domain experts are right there.
