Job Description

Responsibilities

COMPANY OVERVIEW

NL Scientific is a leading Malaysian manufacturer of construction material testing equipment, exporting to over 70 countries worldwide. Our product portfolio encompasses testing solutions for a wide range of materials, including aggregates, asphalt, concrete, cement, rock, soil, steel, and many more. These solutions are compliant with various international testing standards, allowing us to support infrastructure projects across global markets and promote safe building standards worldwide.

We are establishing a new Product Innovation, Research, and Development department to future-proof our machines through:

  • Hardware standardisation
  • Design optimisation
  • Automation readiness
  • Modular system architecture
  • Next-generation product development

You’ll be joining at an exciting stage in our development, and will be helping to shape both the technical direction and engineering culture of the team.

ROLE OVERVIEW

As an R&D Electrical Design Engineer, you will own the electrical architecture and design of NL Scientific’s testing machines. Your focus will be on standardising electrical systems, improving safety and reliability, and redesigning legacy wiring into clean, modular, and internationally-compliant electrical designs suitable for repeatable production. This includes systems ranging from motor controls and sensor integration to safety interlocks and power circuits.

Additionally, you will work closely with mechanical engineers, embedded systems engineers, and production teams to ensure machines are safe, maintainable, and compliant with international electrical regulatory standards (e.g. CE, IEC, CSA, etc.).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Electrical System Design & Standardisation

Design and standardise complete electrical architectures for production machines, including power distribution, motor drives, sensors, control circuits, grounding and protection systems. Develop repeatable designs and SOPs to eliminate unit-to-unit variation.

Safety & Standards Compliance

Ensure all designs comply with electrical system and machinery safety standards (e.g. CE, IEC, etc.). Implement proper grounding & isolation, overload protection, emergency stops and fail-safe mechanisms to meet international certification requirements.

Legacy & Next-Gen Product Prototyping, Testing & Debugging

Build and test electrical system prototypes for new and redesigned machines. Diagnose faults using multimeters, oscilloscopes and other test equipment to validate performance, reliability and safety under real operating conditions.

Manufacturing & Production Support

Create wiring schematics, PCB designs, BOMs and assembly work instructions. Support the production team in resolving wiring errors, component substitutions and installation issues to improve build consistency and quality.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with mechanical, embedded and industrial design teams to integrate actuators, sensors, and controllers into cohesive systems. Support system-level design decisions and trade-offs.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

Identify opportunities to improve wiring layouts, modularity, serviceability and cost. Benchmark competitor machines and propose design enhancements for next-generation products.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Electrical, Electronics, or Mechatronics Engineering, or a similar relevant discipline.
  • Fresh graduates or junior engineers with 1-2 years of experience welcome (Junior Role);
  • 2+ years of experience preferred for Mid/Senior Roles.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong fundamentals in electrical system design for industrial machinery (power, control, protection).
  • Ability to understand and design wiring schematics, single-line diagrams, and panel layouts, as well as relevant component selection.
  • Familiarity with the use of electromechanical devices (pumps, DC/AC/servo motors) and their electrical control/drive systems.
  • Familiarity with international electrical standards (IEC, CE, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of electrical safety principles, high-voltage protection, EMC, and thermal performance.
  • Experience with BOM creation, documentation, and revision control.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Experience with PCB design (e.g. KiCAD or other design tools) & manufacturing.
  • Experience in PLC, microcontroller, or sensor-based control systems is advantageous.

Soft Skills:

  • Proven ability to work autonomously while effectively managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
  • Good communication in Bahasa Malaysia, English; Proficiency in Mandarin is a plus (for China supplier coordination).
  • Team player with leadership potential and cross-department coordination ability.
