Mechanical Engineer – Construction Industry

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, testing, and maintenance of mechanical systems in construction projects, such as HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and building services. The role ensures systems are efficient, compliant, and aligned with project requirements.

Key Responsibilities

1. Design & Planning

• Design mechanical systems, including:HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)Fire protection systemsPlumbing and drainage
• Review drawings, specifications, and calculations
• Ensure designs meet local codes, regulations, and standards

2. Project Coordination

• Coordinate with:ArchitectsCivil/structural engineersElectrical engineers (MEP coordination)
• Attend technical meetings and site coordination meetings
• Resolve design clashes using tools like BIM (Revit/Navisworks)

3. Installation & Site Supervision

• Supervise installation of mechanical systems on-site
• Ensure work is carried out according to:Approved drawingsProject specificationsSafety standards
• Monitor subcontractors and vendors

4. Testing & Commissioning

• Conduct system testing and inspections
• Oversee commissioning of HVAC, fire, and plumbing systems
• Ensure systems operate efficiently before handover

5. Quality Assurance & Compliance

• Ensure compliance with:Industry standards (ASHRAE, SMACNA, etc.)Local authority regulations (e.g., BCA in Singapore)
• Perform inspections and prepare quality reports
• Handle defects and rectification works

6. Cost & Material Control

• Assist in:Material selection and approvalCost estimation and budgeting
• Work with procurement team to ensure correct materials are used

7. Documentation & Reporting

• Prepare and maintain:Technical reportsMethod statementsShop drawings and as-built drawings
• Submit reports to consultants and clients

Key Skills & Competencies

• Strong knowledge of MEP systems
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
• Familiarity with BIM and design software (AutoCAD, Revit)
• Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Knowledge of construction processes and safety practices
• Strong coordination and communication skills

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in:Mechanical Engineering or related field
• Typically 2–8+ years of experience (depending on level)
• Experience in:Building services / construction projects
• Certifications (advantage):Professional Engineer (PE)LEED / Green Mark (in Singapore context)

Position Level in Organization

• Reports to:Project Manager / MEP Manager
• Works closely with:Site EngineersQuantity SurveyorsContractors and subcontractors
