Job Description

Responsibilities

We seek a talented Robotics Engineer with a focus on Mechanical and Mechatronics systems to design, develop, prototype, and validate the physical architecture of cutting-edge autonomous robotic platforms. In this role, you will create robust, integrated hardware solutions, focusing on mechanical innovation, structural integrity, thermal management, and system dynamics. You will collaborate with distinguished professors and industry experts, ensuring our platforms are reliable and performant in diverse operational scenarios, including demanding aerial applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical structures and components for autonomous robotic platforms using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, AutoCAD).
  • Perform structural analysis (e.g., FEA), thermal analysis, and material selection for robotic components.
  • Analyze robotic kinematics and dynamics to inform mechanical design and ensure system stability and performance, particularly for aerial platforms.
  • Design and integrate actuation systems (motors, gearboxes, linkages) and custom end-effectors or payloads.
  • Prototype and manufacture components using techniques such as 3D printing, CNC machining, molding, and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Oversee the assembly and physical integration of robotic systems.
  • Design mounting solutions and ensure proper physical integration of sensors (e.g., IMUs, LiDAR, cameras) and electronic components.
  • Conduct validation and performance testing (including environmental and flight tests) focusing on mechanical robustness, reliability, and system dynamics.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, control, and software engineers to ensure seamless integration of mechanical designs.
  • Create and maintain thorough technical documentation (CAD models, drawings, assembly instructions, test procedures/reports).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in robotics hardware design and development with a strong mechanical/mechatronics focus, or equivalent academic R&D experience.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360).
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, materials science, manufacturing processes, kinematics, and dynamics.
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping techniques (e.g., 3D printing, machining) and workshop tools.
  • Experience designing and building functional robotic systems or complex mechatronic devices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • Experience with simulation tools for mechanical analysis (FEA, CFD).
  • Experience designing for specific environmental conditions (e.g., vibration, temperature, ingress protection).
  • Experience with designing aerial robotic platforms.
  • Familiarity with relevant robotics safety standards (e.g., ISO 10218, ISO 13849) and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a design from concept through prototyping to functional hardware.
  • A strong research record or portfolio showcasing mechanical/mechatronics design projects.
