My client is a global quantitative high-frequency trading firm powered by technology, data, and scientific rigor; operating across trading and research platforms where reliability, data integrity, and performance are non-negotiable.
As they scale, my client is hiring a Database Engineer to own database infrastructure across trading, post-trade processing, and large-scale data systems. This role blends deep database administration with automation and collaboration with trading/research teams.
Responsibilities
- Deploy, scale, secure, and manage production database systems (PostgreSQL, MySQL, ClickHouse, SQL Server, Oracle, NoSQL, etc.)
- Automate database operations (provisioning, replication, failover, backups) using Python, Go, or shell scripting to reduce operational toil
- Design and maintain high availability, disaster recovery, and replication strategies for critical trading systems
- Monitor database performance, tune queries, manage capacity planning, and troubleshoot issues
- Work closely with trading, research, and engineering teams on schema design, data architecture planning, and technology selection
- Build and manage ETL pipelines; support petabyte-scale data warehouses and distributed database systems
- Manage database security, permissions, and access controls
- Participate in a global on-call schedule for database incidents
- Create and maintain technical documentation
Requirements
- 5+ years in production database administration (at least 2 of: PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, ClickHouse, or NoSQL)
- Strong Linux production experience; comfortable using the shell to troubleshoot database and system issues
- Proficiency in Python or Go for automation tasks; strong SQL skills (T-SQL, PL/pgSQL, etc.)
- Solid understanding of replication, backup/recovery, performance tuning, and capacity planning
- Experience with database monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Prometheus, Splunk, CloudWatch, Datadog)
- Familiarity with Jenkins or similar CI/CD pipelines
- Organized, proactive, able to work under pressure, and comfortable owning projects end-to-end
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
Nice to have / preferred
- Experience in financial services / trading environments, particularly post-trade processing systems
- Petabyte-scale data warehouse or distributed database experience (Cassandra, etc.)
- Cloud database administration (AWS RDS/Aurora, etc.)
- Proficiency with pandas, Jupyter, or AI coding tools
- BI services (SSIS, SSRS, SSAS)
