Job Description

Responsibilities

Company Description Saipem is a global leader in engineering and construction for major offshore and onshore projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors. Organized into specialized business lines, the company delivers asset-based services, drilling, energy carriers, offshore wind, and sustainable infrastructure solutions. With fabrication yards, a modern fleet of construction vessels and drilling rigs, Saipem focuses on technological innovation and “engineering for a sustainable future.” The company supports clients in the energy transition towards Net Zero through digital tools, advanced technologies, and environmentally sustainable processes. Listed on the Milan Stock Exchange, Saipem operates in more than 50 countries and employs a diverse workforce of about 30,000 people from over 130 nationalities.

Role Description This is a full-time, on-site role based in Malaysia or other countries for a Senior Principal Material and Coating Engineer. The role involves providing expert technical guidance on material selection, corrosion management, and coating systems for complex offshore and onshore energy and infrastructure projects. The engineer will define and review material specifications, coating and lining systems, and corrosion protection strategies, ensuring compliance with international standards, client requirements, and Saipem procedures. Day-to-day activities include performing technical studies, conducting risk assessments, reviewing engineering deliverables, and supporting bid preparation and project execution phases. The role also requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams, procurement, fabrication, and construction, as well as mentoring junior engineers and supporting continuous improvement of material and coating practices.

Qualifications
  • Strong expertise in materials engineering, including metallic and non-metallic material selection, corrosion mechanisms, and degradation in offshore and onshore environments.
  • Proficiency in coating and lining systems, including specification, application methods, inspection criteria, and performance evaluation for pipelines, structures, and process equipment.
  • Experience with corrosion protection strategies such as cathodic protection, corrosion monitoring, and life-cycle assessment of materials and coatings.
  • Solid understanding of relevant international codes and standards (e.g., ISO, NACE/AMPP, ASTM, API) and their application to energy and infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and review material and coating engineering deliverables, including data sheets, specifications, technical reports, and technical queries.
  • Experience supporting procurement and fabrication, including vendor qualification, technical bid evaluations, and review of vendor documents for material and coating compliance.
  • Proven ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary project teams and interface with clients, suppliers, and construction teams in a complex project environment.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills, with the ability to perform root-cause analyses, failure investigations, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science
