Overall Job Objective
The Design & Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the D&E team to ensure efficient design execution, accurate technical documentation, and timely delivery of prototypes and production-ready outputs. The role also focuses on cost optimization, process improvement, and strong cross-functional collaboration to support manufacturing and project execution.
Key Responsibilities1. Prototype & First Article Inspection (FAI) Coordination
- Coordinate closely with Production and Project teams for prototype development and FAI preparation.
- Ensure all prototypes are completed and ready for customer review within agreed timelines.
2. Technical Documentation & Engineering Control
- Ensure all Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawings, shop drawings, and cutting lists are consistently updated and maintained.
- Ensure full alignment and accuracy between BOMs, technical drawings, and production documentation.
- Review engineering data regularly with the Project team to maintain accuracy and consistency.
3. Value Engineering & Cost Optimization
- Drive Value Engineering initiatives to reduce material cost and improve production efficiency across all product lines.
- Collaborate with the Costing Department to analyze pre- and post-production costs and identify improvement opportunities.
4. Team Leadership & Performance Management
- Set clear departmental goals and communicate expectations effectively to the team.
- Develop job descriptions and KPIs for D&E team members in collaboration with senior management.
- Monitor and evaluate team performance against KPIs, implementing corrective actions when needed.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and motivation to improve team capability and performance.
5. Process Improvement & Efficiency
- Improve efficiency in BOM preparation and engineering drawing processes.
- Continuously review workflows to enhance accuracy, speed, and productivity.
- Ensure timely completion of all engineering deliverables.
6. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Production, Project, Procurement, Costing, and Management teams to ensure smooth project execution.
- Ensure effective communication and coordination across all relevant departments.
7. Reporting & Administration
- Prepare and submit monthly D&E reports in a timely manner according to management requirements.
- Conduct weekly team meetings to monitor progress and ensure tasks are completed within deadlines.
8. Operational Support & Flexibility
- Support production operations or assume responsibility of the Production Department when required by management.
- Undertake any additional tasks assigned by management from time to time.
