HMT Industries manufactures paper food packaging. Our Trading Division supplies the products we do not manufacture in-house, so that our customers can source a complete range from one supplier.
This role finds those products, secures reliable suppliers, controls the landed cost, and sets the selling price.
This is not a sales role. Our sales team owns the customer relationship and closes the order. This role owns the product, the supplier, and the margin.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Sourcing and supplier management
- Work with the sales team to identify products customers are asking for that HMT does not manufacture.
- Search for, shortlist and qualify suppliers, both local and overseas.
- Request quotations, samples and specifications; negotiate price, minimum order quantity, lead time and payment terms.
- Verify supplier documentation for food-contact packaging (food grade certificates, test reports, material declarations).
- Build and maintain an approved supplier list, with at least two qualified sources for each key product.
2. Costing and pricing
- Build the full landed cost for every product: product cost, freight, duty, handling, packing and any local charges.
- Set selling prices in line with the company minimum gross margin guidelines.
- Escalate any deal below the minimum margin to the Managing Director for approval before quoting.
- Review pricing at least quarterly, and immediately whenever supplier cost or exchange rates move.
3. Working with the sales team
- Respond to sales enquiries for non-manufactured products within 2 working days.
- Provide the sales team with specifications, images, minimum order quantity, lead time and selling price.
- Support sample requests, first orders and any technical questions from customers, through the sales team.
4. Inventory and order follow-through
- Decide, for each product, whether we hold stock or order against confirmed customer orders.
- Keep trading inventory within the agreed value limit and monitor slow-moving stock monthly.
- Follow up shipments, documents and delivery dates with suppliers and forwarders.
- Keep all supplier contacts, quotations and cost records in the company system, not in personal files.
5. Reporting
- Submit a one-page weekly report (format below).
- Attend a 30-minute weekly review with the Managing Director and the Sales Assistant Manager.
REQUIREMENTS
- Diploma or degree in business, supply chain, international trade, or equivalent working experience.
- At least 3 years in sourcing, purchasing, merchandising or trading. Packaging, disposables, FMCG or food-related industry preferred.
- Able to communicate in English and Mandarin. Mandarin is required for dealing with China and Taiwan suppliers. Bahasa Malaysia is an advantage.
- Comfortable building costings in Excel and calculating gross margin and landed cost without supervision.
- Working knowledge of import documentation, Incoterms and freight forwarding.
- Strong negotiator with disciplined follow-through.
- Fully transparent with cost and supplier information. This role handles confidential pricing and must be trustworthy.
ADVANTAGE
- An existing supplier network in food packaging, paper or plastic disposables.
- Experience sourcing from China, Taiwan, Vietnam or Indonesia.
