The Opportunity

As an early Software Engineer on our Singapore team, you will co-own the stack. The foundational architecture is mostly built, and there's real room to expand or rebuild parts of it as we scale our next phase of customer delivery. This is a full-stack, systems-oriented role spanning our product frontend, workflow orchestration engine, and cloud/on-prem deployments. We don't expect you to be the foremost expert in all three layers. Instead, we're looking for a T-shaped generalist who spikes deeply in one or two areas and has the curiosity to lean into the others. We're still a young company, so priorities shift as we learn, and we value someone genuinely energized by that rather than someone who wants a narrowly scoped role. You will be joining a small, senior team, working closely with our existing Singapore and US engineers, with significant autonomy and minimal bureaucracy.

Job scope

What You'll Do

Depending on where you spike technically, you will take deep, primary ownership over one or two of these core pillars, while collaborating with the team to support the others as our needs evolve:

• Frontend Ownership: Evolve our user-facing interfaces using TypeScript and React. You'll translate complex scientific and operational data (plate/well visualization, culture tracking, datasets, workflow monitoring) into clean, usable, production-ready UI, bridging the gap between technical constraints and great user experience.
• Workflow Orchestration & Task Engine: Design and harden the Python/Django systems that schedule and track long-running biological workflows. You will manage state, retries, idempotency, and observability for distributed, asynchronous work.
• Reliability & Deployment: Bring a pragmatic SRE mindset to our existing IaC (Pulumi) cloud and our on-prem (Electron) deployment paths, including our air-gapped Kubernetes (K3s) environments.
• Full-Stack Feature Ownership: Take features from design and architecture through implementation and deployment, ensuring a resilient and performant experience for our scientific and operations users.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a highly independent and adaptable Software Engineer with a passion for solving complex problems at the intersection of software and biology. You'll be joining a highly experienced team eager to provide support as you grow.

• Experience: Approximately 5 years of professional software development experience, ideally in a fast-paced startup environment. You're excited about individual contributor (IC) work and eager to take on significant ownership as an early team member.
• Pragmatic High-Bar: You know what "perfect" academic architecture looks like, but you have the judgment to build "good enough for now." You hate gold-plating and over-engineering, preferring momentum and shipping value over theoretical perfection.
• Your Technical Spike: Deep, proven proficiency in either frontend (TypeScript/React, paired with strong UI/UX instincts) or distributed backend systems (Python/Django, state machines, async task execution), with a willingness to own and learn the rest of the stack.
• Autonomy & Execution: A track record of shipping high-quality, well-tested features with minimal supervision. You're comfortable with ambiguity and figuring out the path forward.
• DevOps Comfort: Basic comfort or willingness to learn deployment pipelines and observability, ideally across both cloud and self-hosted/Kubernetes environments.
• Mission-Driven: A genuine interest in biology, lab automation, and serving scientific personas. You are motivated by the real-world impact of your work on accelerating scientific discovery.

Technical Toolkit (Bonus Points)

We value candidates who spike in one or more of these areas:

• Experience managing air-gapped deployments or self-hosted Kubernetes (K3s) clusters.
• Strong product/design instincts or UI/UX experience for frontend-leaning candidates.
• Exposure to integrating with hardware, lab instruments, or robotic workcells.
• Interest or experience in LLM-powered tooling or agents (we use FastMCP/PydanticAI).
• Experience integrating and working with scientific data systems (e.g. LIMS systems).
• Prior exposure to biotech, life sciences, or lab environments.
• Knowledge of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles.
• A strong portfolio of personal projects or open-source contributions.
• Professional working proficiency in Japanese (or "Business-level Japanese") to collaborate with our Japanese-speaking customers.
