Hiring: Senior PHP Engineer

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior PHP Engineer to join the Product Engineering team of one of our key clients in Malaysia.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining customer-facing and internal platforms across APIs, services, databases, and cloud environments. The role is primarily focused on the PHP and MySQL ecosystem, with strong exposure to React.js and AWS Cloud.

The position is ideal for a hands-on software engineer with strong application development experience, a solid understanding of software engineering best practices, and an interest in leveraging Generative AI tools responsibly to improve development productivity and software quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain software applications and programs.
• Spend up to 75% of the time on hands-on application development across major programs and multiple platforms.
• Design and develop scalable applications, APIs, services, and database solutions.
• Conduct technical design and code reviews.
• Provide technical guidance, advice, and support to junior members of the engineering team.
• Prepare, review, and maintain system and program documentation.
• Perform application and database analysis and design.
• Design and develop application enhancements and provide support for troubleshooting and issue resolution.
• Work closely with Business Analysts to understand, clarify, and validate business requirements.
• Deliver high-quality applications that are secure, reliable, maintainable, defect-free, and fit for purpose.
• Develop solutions that comply with security and privacy standards.
• Communicate development progress, technical issues, risks, and project status to relevant stakeholders.
• Collaborate across teams and functions to ensure the ongoing health, performance, and reliability of IT systems.
• Drive automated testing and enforce SDLC controls and secure coding practices.
• Collaborate with Product Owners, Designers, QA Engineers, Platform/Cloud Engineers, and Security teams.
• Respond rapidly to high-severity system issues and resolve incidents effectively.
• Participate in troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.

AI and Generative AI Responsibilities

• Use approved Generative AI coding assistants to improve development velocity, code quality, and developer experience while maintaining security and privacy standards.
• Leverage approved AI tools for boilerplate code generation, test scaffolding, code refactoring, code explanations, and other development activities.
• Follow organizational AI governance, security, and privacy requirements when using AI-assisted development tools.
• Contribute to the design or integration of LLM-powered capabilities, including AI coding assistants, RAG-based documentation search, AI-assisted test generation, and other AI-enabled engineering solutions.
• Support the responsible adoption of AI technologies within software development and engineering workflows.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum 5 years of experience in programming and application design.
• Bachelor's degree or tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years of proven commercial experience in PHP application development.
• Minimum 3 years of commercial experience developing applications using React.js.
• Strong knowledge of Object-Oriented (OO) analysis and design.
• Experience with OO methodologies, principles, and software development techniques.
• Strong knowledge and practical experience with relational databases such as MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL.
• Strong development experience with PHP frameworks, particularly Laravel and/or CodeIgniter.
• Working knowledge and experience with Python.
• Practical AWS Cloud knowledge and experience in a business or production environment.
• Experience working in Linux environments.
• Knowledge of Nginx and web server technologies.
• Experience with automated testing and browser automation tools such as Selenium, Puppeteer, or Playwright.
• Strong understanding of secure software development practices.
• Experience with SDLC processes, automated testing, and software quality practices.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.

Preferred Experience

• Experience designing or integrating LLM-powered applications or capabilities.
• Experience with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions.

• Strong understanding of API design and integration.
• Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
• Experience in production support, incident management, and resolving high-severity system issues.
• Experience mentoring junior developers and conducting technical code reviews.
