Network Engineer Roadmap

You build and run the networks everything else assumes. A steady, unglamorous, always-hiring path - indicative 2026 entry salaries $60-85k US - usually entered via helpdesk/NOC seats, with cloud networking and automation as the 2026 growth edge.

Stage 1 - Fundamentals 4 item(s)

  • Core protocols: DNS, DHCP, ARP, TLS, HTTP - and reading them in Wireshark Critical
  • Linux + command-line comfort (ping, traceroute, dig, ip) Critical
  • Subnetting until it is arithmetic, not anxiety Critical
  • TCP/IP model for real: what actually happens at each layer Critical

Stage 2 - Build & Configure 4 item(s)

  • A lab you actually break: Packet Tracer/EVE-NG topologies + write-ups Critical Lab write-ups are your portfolio - networking interviews are troubleshooting interviews.
  • Firewalls & security: rules, NAT, VPNs, zero-trust direction Critical
  • Routing & switching: VLANs, OSPF basics, what BGP does Critical
  • Wireless fundamentals: channels, interference, site basics

Stage 3 - The 2026 Edge 4 item(s)

  • Cloud networking: VNets/VPCs, peering, load balancers, private endpoints Critical
  • CCNA (or equivalent) as structure + HR signal
  • Monitoring: SNMP, NetFlow, dashboards, alert hygiene
  • Network automation: Python/Ansible for config - the pay-rise skill

Stage 4 - Job-Ready Proof 3 item(s)

  • CV/LinkedIn target "Network Engineer/NOC" naming lab + cert progress Critical
  • Passed a mock interview including a live troubleshooting walkthrough Critical

Network Engineer roadmap FAQ

Is networking still a good career with everything moving to cloud?

Yes - the cloud IS networks, and people who truly understand routing, DNS and TLS are scarcer than ever because everyone else abstracted it away. Cloud networking (VNets/VPCs, load balancers, private endpoints) is the growth edge on classic skills.

Is the CCNA still worth it?

As a learning structure and HR signal, yes - it remains the reference entry cert. Pair it with a home/virtual lab (Packet Tracer, EVE-NG) because interviews probe hands-on troubleshooting, not flashcards.

How do I get in without experience?

The classic ladder works: helpdesk or NOC -> network technician -> network engineer, moving up in 1-2 years. Lab write-ups and a CCNA compress the timeline; troubleshooting stories win the interviews.

What next once the list is green?

Prove it under pressure: take the free Mock Interview, then check your application signals.
